The bearing in question is the one on the end of the auger... opposite the drive end.
While at the bearing shop, I picked up some penetrating fluid that was supposed to be the bomb... well, it bombed. Ditto heat.. that race was not going anywhere! Ended up cutting and splitting the race to get it off. Cleaned up the end of the shaft where I'd mushroomed it earlier, wire brushed and oiled it and got the new bearing on. Some new bolts for the flanges (the old ones were rusted and painted in place... no match for the impact, but they were done) finished it off. And joy - a new collar came with the bearing!
Good for another 20 years! LOL Took me probably 3.5hrs to get it done... a lot more work than I expected for what is essentially a simple job.
I really need a small die grinder for jobs like this... a 4.5" wheel, even one worn down like the one I had, is too much to get into tight places.
I thought about doing the other bearing now, but I'd had enough of that for one day and it's giving me no signs of being shot. The other bearing is quite safe on my shelf... it's not going anywhere.
