While inspecting my 3pt blower today, I noticed that I have what appears to be a ruined bearing on the (non-drive) end of the auger. How do I deal with this? (I know, "replace the bearing"). I've never replaced a bearing, so I'm wondering, how do I describe it to the counter person when I phone in? What are they going to want to know in order to get me the right part? And lastly, how do I replace it? In this application, are they normally pressed into place or just held in place?

Got it apart. Well, mostly. The collar was seized on so I had to cut it off. The outer race was cracked so it came apart easily. The inner race is seized on tight but I was able to get the right replacement bearing this AM by measuring the shaft size and bring the old parts and flanges to the bearing shop. $22 for a new bearing. Grabbed two in case the other one goes. Now, to somehow get the old race off after having 20+ years to rust on there.

Hello Babzog,

Is the open bearing on the interior of the snow caster or exposed on the exterior-one of the outboard sides?

About removing your old bearing, I would purchase a Bernzomatic fat man torch and heat it up with that and it should pop right off the auger after you heat it up.pleae be sure to examinine the inner race or locking collar for a set screw as the set screw must be removed prior to removing the bearing.

I'd just replace both now!!! If the one is bad the other is probably not that far from being bad. Second thing to consider that in the middle of a snow storm next year, where did I put that other bearing?

The bearing in question is the one on the end of the auger... opposite the drive end.

While at the bearing shop, I picked up some penetrating fluid that was supposed to be the bomb... well, it bombed. Ditto heat.. that race was not going anywhere! Ended up cutting and splitting the race to get it off. Cleaned up the end of the shaft where I'd mushroomed it earlier, wire brushed and oiled it and got the new bearing on. Some new bolts for the flanges (the old ones were rusted and painted in place... no match for the impact, but they were done) finished it off. And joy - a new collar came with the bearing!

Good for another 20 years! LOL Took me probably 3.5hrs to get it done... a lot more work than I expected for what is essentially a simple job.

I really need a small die grinder for jobs like this... a 4.5" wheel, even one worn down like the one I had, is too much to get into tight places.

I thought about doing the other bearing now, but I'd had enough of that for one day and it's giving me no signs of being shot. The other bearing is quite safe on my shelf... it's not going anywhere.

I didn't take a single one... though I could snap a pic of the old bearing parts in their various states of destruction (they're in a baggie in the recycle bin) and the finished product. Hands were too dirty to pick up the camera.

Yeah, been a member of GJ for a while... it's a really great site too with lots of good folks.

Dremel makes a cut off wheel for their rotary tools. It's about 1 1/4" in diameter. I use them all the time for cutting in tight places.
