Need a Ford Guy I have a 420 tractor timing?
I pulled my Ford 1978 420 tractor/backhoe down for a clutch. Well you know how that goes on old stuff. I have now decided to do a major on the engine, rebuild the front end; replace all hyd hoses on the hoe and tractor and paint. Yes I know that is a lot of work for the age but I have had it 11 years and it cost me nothing 11 years ago. I might have spent $400.00 on it in the last 11 years.
It has an 183cid engine. I have not yet got my Manuel in the mail. Here is my question. I put the front cover off the front to finish the tear down. I cleaned the gears to draw a diagram of the relation of the pump, cam and crank. Well I finely figured the spot for the cam pump and crank. Ford must have a jig or a tool they use. I counted the teeth on the idler while #1 was at TDC. To move the marks around to the right spots. The idler would need to be turned 20 teeth counter clockwise to be correct. The mark on the pump when it is lined upon the idler should point to what #? 3 or 4? I counted to #3. I need to pull it down all the way. I have a total of .015 wear on the pistons and boar.
Also if you have the valve lash. Before I pulled the shaft off it had around .100 lash. My guess it should be around .020. I am just curious on that I should have my book by reassembly. The gear alignment is where I have the question.
My book should be here in a week or so.
What is so hard to believe is this thing ran like a top. Well a top with a worn-out front end, bad clutch and weak houses.
Sorry to be so long. If there are any Ford guys out there please help. I am sure the timing is the same on the 3000,4000 and a 4100.
