Tractor
Deere 4044R cab, Kubota KX-121-3S
Got word from Carver today that the truck carrying my gently used Kubota L3010 left this afternoon around 3:30! The driver has to stop in NY before continuing on up to me here in Vermont, but it looks like late Wednesday afternoon or (worst case) Thursday morning it'll be here. Actually, since there's wet snow in Wednesday's forecast, maybe Thursday is the better plan anyway.

So I'm pouring over the owner's manuals till then, hoping they remembered to add the conditioner so the fuel doesn't gel from the cold, hoping I don't overlook something simple that will prevent the thing from starting, hoping Steve's crew in NC got the ice chains mounted right even though they'd never seen anything so aggressive before, hoping the temps rise at least into the mid-twenties so I can play, um, work on it for hours when it gets here!!!

But the tractor needs a name. I like Brutus, but the Wife hates it. She wants to name it after one of the ships I served on, but Callaghan, Gurnard, Ponce, Jouett and Pluck just don't seem right somehow. So for starters I have a couple of questions for the group. Should a tractor have a masculine name, or should they have girls' names? Or should they be named at all?

Pete - don't rush it. You can't possibly know if you need a boys name or a girls name because you don't even know what sex your tractor is yet. You two have to meet, spend some quality time together, and feel each other out. After a while, I would say after you have done some mainanance work on it, not just use it, you will get a feel for its personality, and a name will suddenly appear. Mine? Well, I owned him about a year before a name stuck. One day I was watching my father-in-law mowing one of my pastures, and the profile of the tractor as it went around the corners looked like the upturned nose of a shark, so I thought about shark names, and Greg Norman the golfer (isn't he called The Shark?) came to mind. Ever since then my tractor has been a "him", and his name is Greg.

Sorry Pete, no help from me. You've just made me realize none of my "toys" has a name. Just "truck", "van", "big tractor", "little tractor" etc. Even my real favorites are just "good bike", "old bike" etc.

Should be interesting to hear if others name thiers.

It has been my, and my wifes opinion for some time now that all "vehicles of beauty, speed, or grace" should have female names. However, we have a couple of things that have gender neutral names. Example: Our pickup is simply "The Beast", our daily commuter car is "Cutie". However, our Cherokee is "Stella".

I agree that the name should not be rushed. If you drive it, the name will come.

Although I don't have a name for my baby just yet,
I think they should be feminine. Especially if you like to talk tractors. I'd rather be overheard saying "So I climbed on top of her" then him!

Pete -

Brutus has long been taken by Richard, so your wife can relax. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

We ran a thread about tractor names a while back, but I don't recall a lot of names coming out of that. Besides Brutus and Pumpkin, the only one that I recall was Scruffy's ol' Grumpy. I suppose that still leaves Happy, Sneezy, Dopey, etc. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I haven't laid an actual name on my L2500, but I notice that when I call him "Big Fella", he runs just a little better. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

All tractors and pickup trucks should have a name. Gender depends on the character of the machine. My pickup is named Teal. Not just because of the color but because it has a character much like the sub-human form that roamed my home town with a last name of Teal. My current tractor is a John Deere named J.D. because at that price it should be an executive. My new tractor is a NewHolland with a name of Dutch. I guess I am not very creative with names.

We always name everything. My B2710's name has always been Rhody, as in Rhody Kuboty. My suburban's name is Greeny and my wife's van's name is whitey. My son had a biege pickup named "tan scratcher". My brother has a 1989 Mazda van by the name of "old grey mare". How else can you talk to your stuff if they ain't got a name?
