Do y'all know of any glue or epoxy that would work to SAFELY close a hole on a plastic gas tank?
The hole is about the size of the head of a straight pin.

Or any other product??

Thanks,
Mule

Auto parts stores have epoxy make for that purpose. Read the label making sure it says for gasoline.

I've had good luck with a putty-type epoxy (rather than liquid type) that is marketed specifically for fuel tank repair and is fuel-safe. Most auto parts and hardware stores 'round here have it.

Goop up a small sheet metal screw with silicone and thread it in.

I did a repair on a 1/2" crack on a windshield washer container on a car. I used a pencil size soldering iron. Just warm the area by plunging into the damage and smoothing the repair back. I would suggest you flush the tank well.

If you need alittle more filler rod look for a bit of extra material on the tank

I use the same method as Craig. You might not want to use a propane soldering iron on a gas tank. Electric iron with a chisel tip works great.

There has been several threads on plastic welding etc...

The cohesion ability of HDPE is not very hi...I would try fusing the hole with heat over a 2nd party material...

Many years ago, I had very good success with epoxy and a few scraps of glass fiber cloth.

The big trick is to slightly oxidize the surface of the plastic tank with a propane torch. Just a few seconds contact, with the flame about 1" from the brass tip, not the very hot part at the tip of the blue cone in the fire, will oxidize the surface of the plastic tank, and will allow epoxy to stick better. This is not for the faint of heart.

Try cleaning the repair area with brake clean, scuff the area with coarse emery cloth, mix up some JB Weld, J-B Weld Company - World's Finest Cold Weld - Don't Scrap It! J-B Weld It!, smear it over the repair area, let it set for 24 hours, unless you use their quick set mix. You can't imagine the items I have repaired with this stuff. check out their website. Good luck.
