Hi everyone. I found this site while searching for information on a specific Cub Cadet and thought I might be able to get some information or help from you guys.

I need to get a riding mower, but don't have much cash because both my wife and I have been laid off in the past 6 months. Now that it is spring, we can't afford to pay to have our acre lot cut by someone else. There's a real estate auction that I'll be attending tomorrow and they have a Cub Cadet listed to be auctioned.

Cub Cadet HDS 2165 hydro drive 16HP V-twin

All I've got is a picture of it (below). Don't know how old or how much it has been used. There are three other full-size tractors for sale, so I can't imagine this was used heavily for anything more than the immediate yard around the house.

I'm about as novice as they come, so any information you guys could help me with would be outstanding. Things to look for, questions to ask (if they even have an answer), etc. I'm sure they'll start if up and let people make sure it is operational. I think the owner died, so I don't know what info the auction company will have on the specific piece.

Here's the picture that I have. Thank you for any feedback at all.

ROugh figures:
New: about $3000
Used: about $1500-2500

Auction: $500-1,000 especially if you don't know anything about it.

If you know it runs and needs nothing: $1000-1500 up to used price if you are 100% sure about it.

Anyone else?

from the pix, looks a bit rough. Engine side panels and deck deflector missing. If it's been stored outside at all, I would pass.

Her's a link to another similar used unit for sale to give something to compare to: CUB CADET HDS2165 Riding Lawn Mowers For Sale At TractorHouse.com

IMHO, unless you are quite familiar with L&G trqctors, would proceed with caution. You don't want to buy a money pit.

Both responses at 2:01! Nice timing!

I talked to the auction house and they said that it is definitely "used" but that it runs and the family used it yesterday to clean up the lawn in preparation for the auction. Hoping the weather stays bad and it drives people away.

Any other thoughts/opinions/comments would be greatly welcomed.

Looks a bit rough to me. I wouldn't go more than $700 if that was selling around here. I'm not a fan of the way those models control speed. You're supposed to set the right hand lever to the desired speed, then press the foot pedal all the way down. But many people just use the foot pedal to control speed, and leave the hand lever all the way forward. This puts serious wear on the clutch, and causes it to wear out much quicker than normal. Can be expensive to fix.

I would guess in the $500 ball park sound right to me. As far as CCinCT's talk about the bad transmission, if this on is a HDS, then it is a true hydrostatic transmission. CC got it confused with the AGS models that have the autogear transmission.

I have a 2160 AGS that I bought new in 95 that has over 500 hours on it. (hour meter quit at 498 hours 1 1/2 years ago) Never did a thing to the tranny or the motor, had to replace the PTO and a couple of batteries. I mow almost 3 acres with it, but mine has a 48" deck on it. Plus I used it to plow a 500 foot driveway in the winter. Even my dad ran it for 2 1/2 years mowing about the same amount of grass. She doesn't look pretty anymore(outside all her life lol) but runs fine.

Never ceases to amaze me how people treat their equipment! I'd offer maybe $300 tops for that beast.

Hope it's not too late, or if you got it hope you got a deal on it.
I question whether it's a 2165 or 2160, as the 2160 was the autogear version which this is, with that lever on the right fender. I also question why the panels are off. The tires look like oem issue, so perhaps not too many hours. I've owned a few 2165's, they were OK but had carb issues with both, nothing major. It's the Briggs motor, I much prefer the Kohler command. I would say no more than $700 if it runs and operates well. Good luck, and keep us informed!

In regards to the "AutoGear" concern, I think some of the late 1990's, maybe early 2000's model year 2K series had a cruise control lever on the right fender, looking very much like the AutoGear gear selector.
