I guess the chain link fence part is only for raking smooth after we have it pretty level and "dirt like"?

Yep.
Any type of dragging when there's a lot of residue just tends to pick it up and make inconvenient piles.
If there's still a lot after disking a couple of times, you may have to rake it off and dispose of it.
Hopefully by then most of the dirt will be off the roots

Save time and hook the drag harrow to your disc.

By friend has something he uses to plant his food plots. Not sure what it's called, but I believe it's made by frontier. It's a cultivator, drag, clod buster combo thingy...:D. It leaves a really smooth finish for planting, but it may be too "fluffy" for hydroseeding.
