Ford 1210 / Ford 1710
Hi guys, many of you might know I have a mid 80's Ford 1210 4wd. Because of this forum I have been able to fix a lot of the small things wrong with it and I have added several implements to boot (FEL for one) and learned how to use them. For that I would like to say thanks.

One thing I have noticed with the weight of the loader is the R1's are leaving ruts in the yard most of the time. This has led me to look for turfs to use for some tasks that require driving across the "good" grass. Finding the wheels and pricing the tires has been very tough and expensive.

So.... I bought an identical 1210 that has some kind of engine issue for a very good price. I will pick it up Tuesday, hopefully. It has near new Firestone field and turfs so now I will have a choice of tires and wheel combos. Plus I will have a lot of spare parts. My goal is not to get rich but to get close to breaking even from selling parts and get the tires / wheels for little out of pocket. Even if I don't, it doesn't bother me to have it sitting around indefinitely for my own spare parts. A coworker has already offered 250.00 for the box blade it comes with. Getting it running and using it is not a good option because I really like the idea of have both tire types to choose from.

My question is have any of you guys parted anything out? Is it a big hassle or was it worth it? Time and storage are on my side so that helps.

I hope to post some questions later about the engine problems. It will be fun to diagnose and tear it down to fix it if possible. The owner said it had a burnt piston but I don't know how you can diagnose that without tearing it apart. It actually runs but is firing on only 2 cylinders.

If anyone needs any hard to find parts from the 1210 I will make you a very fair deal. Sorry for the long post but I am pumped about my new project.

Just an update. I've done some disassembly and I don't think this engine is going to run again.

I have gotten a lot of good parts though. The intent is to sell most of the parts but when you are taking apart a tractor just like the one you own it makes it hard. I keep thinking "that would be good to keep" on just about everything.

It has been good to see how this is put together and comes apart. One thing I will say about these Japanese tractors is that they use good fasteners. As rusty as this tractor is most of the bolts come out by hand after breaking them loose.

As soon as I figure out where to put all the hydro fluid after draining it I can start splitting it in half. Can't wait.

wow, did this thing throw a rod. it appears the hole was caused by something from inside rather than out. same thing happened on on push mower ai had with a crappy Tecumseh pot metal engine. Without any warning while i was mowing I heard a big ole bang and something hit my picket fence and poke a hole thru it. i was the lower rods cap that came loose, poking a hole in the side of crankcase and out. It scare the the you know what out of me and I was very fortunate did not hit my kids or the neighbor.

Sld, I have an old Ford NAA that I need to part out. I've kidded myself at times that I would get it running, but the truth is that it just has too many problems to make it cost effective. I've put it off for a long time because I don't want to disassemble it under a shade tree. I want to do it inside my shop that I am going to build. . .sigh! Yep, I don't have the shop built either, so my shop jobs just keep on stacking up. Finally, this year I think I'll get the shop built and be able to disassemble and prepare parts for shipment if I cannot sell them locally.

Good luck with your project. Any of the parts on your 1210 that you can identify/match with other models will surely make them more desireable. For example, if the water pump is common for several models, list all the models and increase your market. I think craigslist might work for some things, but you'll probably have a broader base of possible customers on ebay.

Thanks Jinman,

You are right about listing more models. I need to go back and do that to all the listings I have in eBay. Most of these parts go up one model and down one.

I sold the injectors already on the first day.

My goal is to finish most of the dissassembly and roll it outside out of the way. Then I will put it on blocks and use the tires and wheels (which was why I bought it in the first place).

It seems like a lot of work but it is the kind of work I don't mind doing.

BTW, that rod that let loose didn't just blow thru the cast block. It bulged the .25 thick steel frame. I bet that was very loud.

Looks like the Kubota at work that got a little to much starting fluid !

Hi guys, just thought I would give another update on the parting out project.

I have reached the point of what I paid for the tractor and still have a lot of stuff left. Stuff was selling so fast I went ahead and bought new turf tires all the way around. Actually, the "near new" turfs that came on it had a lot of tread but were very cracked and weathered. At this point all I am out is the price of the new tires but still have tons of stuff around the garage.

I will try and get some pics in the next couple of days. I did clean and repaint the rusty wheels that came with it and they turned out pretty good. Friday I had the tires mounted and I bolted them on and took my tractor out to its summer home.

The salvage tractor is torn down to basically the rear end, hydro tranny and bell housing. Just to get it out of the garage I am thinking of advertising this for 200 - 300 bucks and come and get it. Mine is a gear drive so I have no use for the hydro.

It has been a fun project and it was cool to tear down a similar tractor as mine to see how it goes together. Some of the stuff I am keeping for me are the hydraulic pump, fuel pump, radiator, fuel tank and lots of little stuff like tubes and brackets. Once I got close to the break even point I started thinking how cool it might be to keep some of this stuff.

JC Jetro, you should consider doing this on a 1700 if you can find a decent deal. Parts are scarce and I bet you would do fine. You would be surprised at the demand on eBay. Someone, somewhere needs something for these tractors. I believe the 1700 thru 1720 were way more popular than the 1200 thru 1220 and there seems to be a ton of 12 series owners out there.

SLD,

Sounds fine but got to hold on to my day job. Frankly, I have never bought or sold anything on "Flea bay" yet..but you never know:D. I sure do appreciate any pics that you can share specially in the rear diffy area.

Thanks,

JC,:)

P.S.Probably I can make more money opening up a pastry shop when I retire:D

It is not about making money as much as it is about keeping your machine running and helping keep others going too.

Garage time is about breaking even, not getting rich!:D I don't mind turning the wrenches and I have learned a lot in the process.

I just got a Harbor Freight portable sand blaster and I want to see what baking soda does to clean up the castings.

Sld,

Do you have the tie rod ends for the front steering? I have a 1215, the part numbers match the 1210. If you still have them I would ultimately be interested in all four. Thanks, Tim JR
