Need advice on Tiller/disc for 4310

After much debate (and a lot of help from this forum) I purchased a JD4310 last summer after starting out looking at the larger riding mowers. I have absolutely LOVED it..and have to say that the advice I received from here was right on the money.

I've moved into our new house, and have about 2 acres of pasture that is REALLY rough (several areas where wild hogs have really torn up - ruts 1' deep, uneven, etc), and all covered with bahia grass. I want to level it all out and re-seed.

I assume that I'm probably looking at a tiller, especially for the rough areas, but the delearship said that they have a drag with hooks on it that might work (used on ballfields, etc.) Any advice on attachments for this would be appreciated.

Tilling two acres sounds like a large area, although your soil would likely be sandy. I doubt if I would use a tiller. My dad leveled off much of our property with a heavy duty disc and we had mostly clay soil used for corn over a ten year period. Once the disc work was over I obtained an old commercial chain link fence gate about 8 feet wide and four feet high, then weighted it down with concrete blocks and used it for a drag. Hopefully you don't have a lot of rocks, it took longer for me to pick those out than it did to level the ruts.

Tillers for tph are a little pricey. I have an old double disk that I got from an uncle, and when the wheels are up it cuts very deep. So you may not need the tiller, unless you want one for the long haul for working a garden.

A box blade with scarifers is also an option. Good tillers start at about a $1000 and go up quickly. Most tillers will till about 7" deep but will do a good job. Freshly tilled dirt turns to 7" deep muck if it rains and you have to drive over it....Kyle

If you have plans for future use for a tiller by all means get one. There are places that rent tillers if you just have a short need for one.
To get a field in nece shape a field tilled two times will be easy to drag and level to create a nice seed bed. If, as you mentioned, that you have a grass that is undesireable, I woudl spray the whole field with round up and let it lay to kill it off. Then do your prep work. If I have the time I like to till it once and let the sod break down before tilling the second time. Even a couple of weeks will make a difference. Of course, tilling this time of year and letting it set, you will be waiting untill it dries out before you can do much with it. Have fun

You might want to check a flex harrow from Tractor Supply. I borrowed a tiller to break up my 1+ acre lawn area then the flex harrow to level and finish, nice job.

Good to see you back....glade to hear your happy with your tractor!. I would stick with a disk and something like a chunk of chain link fencing to knock down the high spots.

I just tilled in some new flower beds this past Saturday and I don't think I would want a yard tilled....little bit of rain we got on Sunday morning and it's mid shin deep muck...but thats ok for flower beds....but a yard would be nasty.

I do have a 5' box blade with the scarfers on it id you would like to try it, little bit of travel time to pick it up and return it but it's here if you want to give it a whirl.

No question...get a Deere Tiller....quality at a fair price...hey if you need help getting rid of your wild Boars...let me know...jocking....we have them here in SC as well...My son recently got a 285 pounder...
