Hello to all. I'm well underway on a barn, but need some ideas on a bracket design to fasten TRUE 6x6 posts to concrete pillars. The simpson-style brackets you find at home centers only work for finished lumber (i.e. 5.5"x5.5" or so), and I have rough cut Oak and Hickory 6x6 posts to deal with. I'm wondering if there's some kind of 6" channel that I could lay down that the foot of the post would set into? I have J-bolts running down into the piers. I should mention that these are not to be used on posts on the outer main loadbearing wall. Instead, these are for the posts that will run down either side of a center 12' aisle way to support the floor of a barn loft and also to attach stall fronts and doors. Any ideas for a bracket that's simple and strong would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, if I've missed something that's commercially available that would work by all means post it back here.
Thanks everyone, and good luck with ongoing projects!

I think I would lean toward notching the 6x6 at the end where it matches up with the Simpson bracket, 1/4” on a side. If you design and build a custom bracket you open your self to needing to provide engineering calculations and approval that can be costly. Just my 2 cents worth.

Someone has to make them and they can not be to hard to get. I will ask since your bio does not say maybe if we knew what part of the world you were in someone here might be able to chime in with a local solution /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree with simply removing 1/4" all around the bottom. You're only talking about the first few inches. You could set the depth on your circular saw to the height of the bracket and make the cuts from the end of the post or set up a dado blade in a radial arm saw and adjust the height to 5 and 3/4". Would be a heck of a lot simpler than going crazy finding the brackets, and probably cheaper too!

Todd,

I have the same issue. Not sure if you've checked-out the Simpson web site but there's alot more options (and information) than the local home center might carry. http://www.strongtie.com My local lumber yard (not Home Depot) will order whatever they don't normally stock from Simpson; this includes pole barn brackets.

Simpson also does custom brackets, I have no idea what the minimums or pricing is.

Wow...now found that both Simpson and USP make them. Look for "R" in the model number. For example, PA66 is for a finished 6x6, and PA66R is for a Rough 6x6. Here's a link for a catalog that has pictures and part numbers. If you search for part numbers in Google, you'll find vendors selling them. I found a vendor in NY selling the ones I need for $136.50 per box of 10.

Best of luck, and thanks again!
