My chinese tractor is shut off by pulling a cable that shuts the engine down. This generally takes about 5 seconds for the motor to wind down and if you let the spring loaded cable go too early, the engine restarts again.

I see this as a safety issue as I would like to be able to shut it down positively in an emergency situation such as being attacked by bees, during an instability incident or when doing maintenance where you need to rotate the crankshaft without the engine starting.

I know that modern tractors at least have a key to turn the engine off. What I would like is to have a "kill" button or switch mounted close to the steering wheel that I could hit without much problem and have the engine go dead.

Has anyone out there installed something to do this? I guess a fuel shut off solenoid would do it. A less costly method might be to install a cable operator that could be "tripped" and would positively pull the fuel shut off cable back into a locked position.

You could place an electric shutoff solenoid inline with your fuel line just before the injector pump. Wire it to your ignition switch so that it's activated when you turn your ignition switch to the on position. Then you could simply turn off your ignition and it would shutdown your engine.

My first Kubotas worked like that, except that there was no spring return on
the cable. You could convert to a throttle-type cable control that has
a friction device to hold the control in the OFF position. Since your foot
pedal engine speed control also acts on your FI control lever, which is likely
spring-loaded, you probably can not just eliminate the spring on the FI.
If, however, the foot pedal uses its own spring return, you may be able
to eliminate the spring on the FI and go to a positive push-pull shut-off
cable.

I recently converted my tractor to a fender-mounted engine speed control,
and I used a friction disk for it to hold its position.

Can you just take the spring off? The Massey Harris diesels I drove in the early 1950's and the Ferguson diesels in the late 1950's had pull handles that, if I recall correctly, had enough natural friction to stay where you pulled them. Course you have to remember to push it in to start it.

Seems like it would be better to modify the original method if you can since the natural thing to do in an emergency will be to grab the knob you usually use to turn it off.

I don't know if a valve in the fuel line would stop the engine any quicker than the original cable, since the fluid in the body of the pump might keep the engine going for a few seconds.

if you want to shut down immediately, choking off the air supply is the way it's done ...e.g., see the link I posted above ...and, that's exactly the way my old MB190 D was configured, with an emergency stop ...mechanical injector pump, before computer electronics controlled fueling.

Cable with a spring that overcomes the existing spring would work.
You'd need to design a tripping mechanism however.

Simplest is a 12volt solinoid valve simply spliced into the fuel line.
You would want a normally closed valve, and as suggested wired to the key switch.
In addition you could have a 'dead man switch' in the line like they use on snowmobiles and seadoos for when the rider falls off.

I'd be worried with any kind of fuel shut down, that the tractor's fuel delivery system was not designed around could cause problems with restarting due to loss of fuel in the pump or lines?

Emergency shut off= high gear low throttle depress brake release clutch LOLOLOLOL

For real though your best bet is definitely a solenoid. Easy enough to install, and the most functional and least space consuming. Old international trucks use the cable push/pull cables for fuel shut off, it seems to work just fine for them and is 100% reliable.

I've heard on old trucks there was some lever that would actually mechanically sever the fuel line in case of a real emergency like an out of control diesel going down the road. anyone know if that's true?
