Thanks for the responses folks.

A quick check for fuel shut off solenoids shows only ones with operating arms as opposed to a complete inline valve that opens or closes based upon the application of 12 vdc. I guess I could rig the operating arm to the fuel injection lever that my existing shutoff cable attaches to.

I'm going to do some more checking on-line.

I've heard on old trucks there was some lever that would actually mechanically sever the fuel line in case of a real emergency like an out of control diesel going down the road. anyone know if that's true?

nope, the lever worked an "emergency" butterfly in the air intake ...see my post above. ...But, the image of a hundred or so gallons of fuel pouring out of the severed line is exciting. While we are being imaginative, how about a water injector that hydrolocked the engine? ...or, explosive squibs on the valves that removed compression, so no ignition?

Most of our newer cuts use a 12V solenoid acting on the FI lever, either
normally open or normally closed. If you want an inline fuel valve that will
shut off fuel on the inlet side, you could even use one intended for
hydraulics, like the $35 Hydraforce units I used for my 4-in-1 bucket.
You could use spool or poppet valves. Cheaper low-pressure units should
be commonly available, too.

My ford 5000 has a kill cable to the injector pump.. but it is not spring return.. it has sufficient friction to pull and kill.

In reality.. with the flywheel effect on a diesel engine.. even with fual and airway restrictions.. you are gonna get a few more revs out of her...

Not real feasable to stop the engine dead instantly unless you hydro-lock her.. then you need to have a crated engine ready to install the next time you need to use the tractor.

As others have said, just get rid of the spring and put a friction cable on the existing shutoff. Anything else is vastly over complicating the problem. You can use an old fashioned choke cable and knob to do the job, which you can get at most auto parts stores, or you can spend the extra money and buy one made specifically for diesels. It won't work any better.

The devices that shut the air off are usually emergency shut downs, not to be confused with normal shut downs. They are designed to stop a diesel that is running off of its own lubricating oil (sucking it past the rings or valve guides), which is a very scary thing.

Run away engines are a scary thing. When I was a kid on the farm, my Dad was cultivating with a D17 Allis Chalmers. Something in the injector pump sheared and sent the engine in to full actually above fuel throttle. The engine was racing away at 2 or 3 times the governed full throttle speed. I think he was in 3 gear or the 4 speed and the tractor was going at least 20 mph with the 4 row cultivator bouncing and throwing dirt everwhere. The fuel shutoff on the injector pump had no effect on the fuel flow.> My Dad finally managed to shut off the petcock valve under the fuel tank which was a very hairy ride with the tractor going at the speed it was. I was on another tractor and could only watch helpless. I was glad it wasnt me at the time because I dont think I could have done what he did. I remember Dad saying that he was glad the engine had just been overhauled otherwise it would likely have disintegrated. As it was, we just had to replace the injector pump and it was back to business. I think Dad was a little scared of that tractor from then on because he traded it a year or so later for a larger one.

Is there a compression release on that machine? Seems like a pretty quick emergency shutdown method to me:eek:

I was thinking about that.......using the compression release that my Kama 554 has, but is not currently hooked up.

Graingers has a cable operator lever that would hold that back positively until it's tripped manually to the run position. It would work and is probably the least expensive and easiest thing to do. I would just have to mount it in a very acessible position so it can be operated without fumbling around. The existing fuel shut-off is mounted down low below the steering wheel and I have to bend over while looking to pull the shut-off cable and hold it for about 5 seconds. Whatever I do, it will be mounted very close to the steering wheel and clearly in view.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Some guys have moved their engine stop pull to another location on the dash in order to straighten the pull and make it more convenient. Easy mod -- just drill a new hole somewhere higher and at a oint the cable will reach:D
I would also hook up the decompression lever. JMHO -- the decompression route would be easier and cheaper than fuel cutoff solutions and a simple stop to keep the release pulled should be relatively easy to figure out.

I would think pulling the factory fuel shut off while in gear would shut it down in less than 5 seconds. Give it a test run and try it out, you might be suprized.
