Need Help-1520 Hydr Leak

Had my first break down yesterday. The first time I loaned my tractor out and it sprung a leak. Tractor is a 1969 JD 1520. I bought it last winter and have put about 30 hours on it with no problems, in fact it has been running great.

Loaned it to the neighbor to mow. He mowed for about 1 1/2 hours and it sprung a hydrolic leak. Fluild started squirting out from under the box that the remote lever is in.

Just curious if anyone has any ideas before we tear into it.

Now you know why most of us don't loan out our tractors. But that is beside the point as stuff happens.
What was the neighbor mowing? grass or brush?
Is the tractor sitting out in the woods or back "home" ?

The leak needs to be traced back to just what is leaking. Is it a steel line or a hose? At a connection? Remote lever, assume that means the SCV control?

Need some more info.

Just an old tractor issue. He was mowing grass, not using the remote at all. The leak is coming from the SCV control. The tractor is in my shop.

I could not tell from the picture. By box with lever do you mean the lever for the rear remote or the rockshaft (3pt hitch lever)?

I am guessing the oil line into the SCV. Or o-ring from the side plates of the SCV. If I remember correctly, there is a rubber return hose between the SCV and rockshaft cover. That may hneed replacing.

My 2030 has two SCVs and it developed a leak between them it was the o-rings between them let go replaced them and was fine.

Are you trying to locate what is leaking? Or do you have knowledge of where and just want to know what?

As they say, be careful poking around for leaks with bare hands when under pressure.

Look at jdparts and the SCV (if that is the culprit) will show info as Zebrafive points out.

Might try tightening up the fittings that seem to be leaking, then dry them off best you can if further investigation is needed.

Look for a hose or pipe fitting that may have been bumped or stepped on causing something to twist/move at a fitting/connection/coupling.

It sounds as if the bottom plate on scv sprung a leak. If so this quad ring(part # R74695) is what you'll need to repair it.

Thanks for the advise. The leak appeared to be coming from the lever for the rear remote. I'm going to check the above suggestions when I get home tonight.

Hope it checks out well, and will be an easy fix.

jdparts shows the individual parts, and here is an example...several 0-rings and some referred to as 'packing' #21 and 'sealing washer' #20, and 0-ring #9 and #23 for example.

You can get into jdparts (free registration) and put in the model number to look at various schematics of parts for your 1520 that may help.

Thanks. I went to the JD dealer today and got 2 of the # 21 and 2 of the # 9 rubber gaskets/washers. I am hoping that is what I need. Thanks for the help.
