Hi Post ! I need help, my new Hyd pump picked up something and broke the gears and sheared off the imput shaft. There is no filter in the system, and I don't feal safe putting in another one without some sort of filter system. Would the filter go on the return side? as it don't seem to be much sense to put one on the pressure side. What type do i put on and where do i get it ? It is a 1960 JD 1010 Gas with a 6 way inside blade.
Thanks LWF /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm not familiar with the tractor you mention.. but a suction side filter would be my choice , if possible.
Heck.. even a screen might help 'large' debri from getting into the pump gearing.

IS that 1010 a dozer? I had a 2010 that was a wheel tractor (1964) and it had a removable, cleanable screen filter. Both the 1010&2010 could be converted to a wheel tractor or dozer.

Hi Deerlope < It is a 1010 dozer, i don't see any screen or filter anywhere. The return line comes from the dist box under the dash and goes right to the fill tank and then a short pipe and hose to the pump.

Thanks LWF

Is your pump mounted externally? On my 2010 I had to remove a cover on the under side to see the pump. My hyd oil and trans oil were common. Those tractors had final drive gears in them and used 90wt in there. My 2010 had the 8f &3r shifter mounted on the dash. Under my dash was a block that had two 1/2 pipes coming out of it and they were supply and return. If you pump is external there should be no problem putting a suction line filter on it.

Give these guys a call:

http://www.baumhydraulics.com

They will tell you what you need and then ship it to you. I did just what you want to do with help from this bunch. One point of interest is that they will try very hard to make you put in a return line filter instead of a suction filter because the suction filters are harder on the pumps. However, these will only filter what your pump has already digested. You can get a gauge that makes it real easy to tell when your hydraulic filter is plugged also. (it will bypass then, and you can see it on the gauge.. time for a new filter)

You'll need to know gpm of pump. I installed suction filter for my 23gpm front loader pump. Most return filters can be used for suction if they have a bypass. BUT the filter has to be big enough for gpm of pump. There are 140mesh strainers that will protect pump, but don't do anything for spools in control valves. I beleive mine is 45 micron and is around 16""X6"dia.
Go to filter websites and they will have max gpm for return and suction flow for each model.
