My wife and I recently purchased a building that used to be an old Agway feed mill in a small rural town. In the basement there is an old rusty tank, still full of putrid liquid. The top has a lid that you can open and look inside. On the side you can see there was a copper coil heater element for heating and circulating the liquid. Coming out the top, is a large cast iron pipe (8 inch dia) that used to lead outside. It also appears to have been connected to a water supply. Most interesting is that, also coming out the top, is a pipe of galvanized downspout-like construction that goes to a hopper, which is located next to the big grain hopper on the tipping floor. My guess is that this was a fermentation tank that was used to make molassas/barley malt to mix with grains to make sweet feed? Any thoughts? Thanks.
