i am trying to figure out what this white plastic button is for on the PTO cover. the PTO shaft is on a new King Kutter dome top rotary mower, 5', shear bolt style. also does anyone know if the plastic PTO cover slides back to access the U-joint and the retaining clip. it is darn near impossible to install the retaining ring with the cover over the u-joints. the white plastic button looks like a grease zerk and is positioned between the 2 screw heads in the picture. the other picture is of the inside of the cover if that helps. thanks

Is that where the chain used to attach to prevent the guard from spinning?

here is a couple more pics to show how it looks like a grease zerk.

it is part of the "bearing" that lets the outer cover stay still while the shaft turns inside.

No owner's manual? The shaft should have it's own manual, to show how to safely use it, how and where to cut it if needed to instal on different tractors, etc. Try King cutter .com or similar for PDF file on that model cutter.
The first pic shows and actual zerk and grease in the u-joint.

There should be some way to slide a portion of the sleeve back to allow easier attachment. It looks like the white thing in question is a zerk on the outer portion of the shaft sleeve, probably intended to lube the sleeve bearing.

Yes it's a grease fitting to lube the sleeve bearing, as joecdeere and Coyote machine both mentioned.
There's a ring on the inside of the non-rotating outer cover that slides in a groove on the rotating inner piece that needs to get a little grease from time to time to keep it sliding.
