I have a friend that has an older model (93-94) jd 955. it has about 980 hrs. it has the 70a loader also. I have also looked at the kubota L3400 4x4 new. These tractors are not very far apart in price. I have a small farm (27 acres) and most of the work will be cutting and fence posts. I am new in the tractor business and need some help. I have used the 955 in some landscape work and I like the hydro trans. How much life is left before major repairs? The kubota seems like a lot of machine for the money and has a warranty. Thanks, Randy

BOTH machines will probalby do the job, and both will probably last for MANY years. Numbers thrown around on TBN have the life of a hydro transmission at 5000 hours?!? The Kubota comes with a warrenty and that is tough to beat for piece of mind; the fact that you know the history of the 955 is also reason to trust it.

unless i am missing something, if they are close in price , why would you opt for the used machine?

I would not be afraid of the 980 hours. But I guess it is tough for anyone to make comment here as we don't know the difference in price. If they are the same or really close then it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out, go for the new one. But if you can save 4 or 5 K I would seriously look at the 955.

Have you tried the Kubota, driven it around, played with the controls, looked it over? Do you LIKE it? Do you like the dealer? You can't really make the decision on specs or price exclusively. You need to know if you feel as comfortable on the Kubota as you do on the Deere.

Also, does the Deere come with anything extra which might cost extra on the new Kubota. Over time most tractors pick up little additions that don't seem like much but really add up. Extra top links, toolboxes, lights, FEL hooks, quick hitches, filled tires, ballast box, that kind of stuff.

If the machines are comparable, the prices are close and the Kubota is new with warenty it's not a hard decision and if you like the Kubota just as much.
