HELLO,

Can anyone tell me how operate the transmission on a 350 LONG ?
according TO TRACTOR DATA the 350 has a hi/lo . However it only has one
shiftier such as a normal 5 speed with out hi/lo.

I know it has hi/lo because all 350 models were made with with this feature,
also you can clearly see 2 reverses , but it only has one stick for shifting and this thing is driving me nuts.
I have got to be missing something, and without a manual I'm lost, there must be a lever or something simple I don't see.
Also Tractor Data says it's a 6 speed w/ hi/lo .
If someone can give me some help I would really appreciate it.
P.S.
I took this tractor as a partial trade on farm equipment I sold

Thank you, Duke

Well it has been a long time (pun intended) but I think it is probably like my brother in laws 2260 where you push down and pull up on the shifter as you cross the neutral gate to select the 2 ranges.. As I remember it was a PITA, and I never liked it one bit, but you can get used to it. It also seemed like the pattern was elongated or something.. I am sorry I am so vague, but it has been too many years since I have driven it to remember exactly how it worked. My old Long 2360 had 2 levers, a Hi/Lo and a 4 speed. Again sorry.

That tranny has 3 neutrals. With lever full fwd it is in lo range and has N, 1, 2, 3, R in an H pattern. Pull the lever straight back from N and you'll be in N between Lo and Hi. Pull the lever straight back from there and You'll be in N of Hi range; N, 4, 5, 6, R in another H pattern. Takes some getting used to but then all tractors shift different. Also be aware that 2-5 and 3-6 are syncro while 1 and 4 are not. 1 and 4 lock in gear. You can't move the lever straight to shift out. You must move the lever L or R to unlock it. Don't
recall which but it will become apparent. Shift diagram is cast into the top cover.

Hello Marv 32 thank you for your information on the 350 Long tractor. However, I am happy to report
that I sold the tractor to a gentleman who previously owned a 350 long.
He was quite comfortable with the tractor and had no problems with shifting this beast.

I want to thank you and James for the help, it's gentleman like you guys that makes this a great site.

Sincerely, Duke

P.S. I think the shifting design of this tractor is a engineering flaw on Longs part.

yeah I drove my brother in laws a few times, and got to where I could run it, but it was just stupid, that is the best way I can describe it. Very unergonomic just a PITA to get used to. You can adapt to anything, but the question is why?. My 2360 Long was not like that at all. It shifted pretty well for what it was, and I used it for years.

I couldn't agree more James, I think Long was smoking something when they used that set up. I too had a 2510 Long ,with the regular shifting set up and thought it to be a fine tractor.
All and all I think the Long was a decent tractor for the money.

Thanks James.

FWIW, Oliver 66 and 77 from the 50's had the same shift pattern.
