I'm pretty new to the whole tractor thing. I've had my John Deere 4410 for about a year now. During the summer I've been rototilling about an acre and haven't had any problems. About 3 weeks ago I was using the tiller and again it worked fine.... I haven't used it since then and then yesterday I detached the tiller to hook up the mower, I got it all hooked up and the shaft wouldn't spin(I think that's what you call it). So I have know idea why it's not working now /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I don't know if it's something stupid, that I can't figure out, cause I'm new to this... or if somethings stripped, etc. Any help would be apprecaited. Thanks

Is your mower a rear mount mower or a mid mount ("belly") mower? If it is a mid mount, then be sure that both yellow pull switches are being turned on. Pull on the front one first to engage the shaft, then the rear switch to start things turning.

Another thing to check would be the wiring to the valve that controls the shaft. (The shaft is called the Power Take Off shaft, or "PTO" shaft to use tractor jargon) The valve is located on the right side of the tractor just ahead of the rear axle. There is a rectangular block with a single small hydraulic line running to it. On top of the block are two or more solenoid valves with wires coming in the top. Check that the wires are not broken or the connector pulled apart.

It's the rear mower.... I did check the connectors and they were fine, but I'll have to take a look at the hydralic line running to it.
The middle shaft wasn't working either, and I don't know if the run seperate or together... I'm clueless. lol

Make sure you sre seated when you start the pto, or oare off the tractor. the rub is when you start it while seated then get up, that kills the pto.

Check the solenoids as already mentioned. The most common thing is the wires to them get yanked out or sheared. It is best to get them covered, say with skid plated from Deere, or at least a shield of your fabrication.

Maybe someone with a service manual could get you the pages that cover troubleshooting this. Or you might want to pick up a CD copy on eBay (about $20)

I've checked all the soleniods and those are fine... but the shaft still isn't working. Could something have gotten stripped?

I think the first question that we should answer is whether or not you have verified that the PTO is not turning, without an attachment hooked up to it. (maybe you have and I didn't understand that to be true)
If your tractor PTO doesn't turn on with the switch, then yes, you may need to make a call to the dealer and have them check your tractor out. But, you mention "middle shaft", I'm assuming you are meaning part of the Driveline to the mower deck, which is a whole nother story. If your tractor PTO turns, but nothing happens when you install the drive shaft for the mower, you may just have a broken shear bolt in the drive shaft, or something like that.
Take a look and let us know for sure which area we are talking about..
good luck

The PTO doesn't turn at all wither it's hooked up or not. So my best bet would probably take it to the dealer, right?

The only other thing I would recommend checking before calling the dealer would be to look for a blown fuse.

Another possibility would be contamination in the PTO valve. I haven't removed one of these valves myself, so I don't know how easy it would be to do that and look for contamination. If you are comfortable with doing that, it might be worth the try.

Rear PTO Will Not Engage
*PTO clutch damages or worn/no longer servicable
*Cogs on gear or shift collar damaged or worn/no longer servicable
*Gears and /or bearings worn/no longer servicable
*Oil pressure not sufficient to PTO clutch, Shaft seal or piston ring leaking

Those are the choices in the service manual. What appears to be left out are teh electrical choices since the rear PTO is controlled by the switch on the fender which turn on a hydraulic control valve.
So, check to make sure the valve is turning on when the switch is pulled and if it is then the problem is internal to the PTO. My guess is that it's an electrical problem.
