have a Case DX 45 4wd tractor with loader. i think it is 04 or 05. had it for awhile been pretty reliable few issues. Dad was driving it and said he pulled a hose off, replaced it replaced fluid and loader works again but pto runs but stops, loses power, sometimes runs like it is working (powering brushhog mower) then slows down. sometimes PTO wont start at all. not electrical, pto light comes on and verified all that is good.
hitting me on my weakest link whiich is hydraulics. i am a complete idiot on hydraulics especially since all i have ever done is filter change and line repair and the pto has always worked but do have the service manual for the tractor.
i am waiting for a hydraulic filter to come in, going to change it just as a just because deal even tho it is not very old, ordered a pressure guage to test the pressure on the pto valve deal the pto handle engages, supposed to be 260 psi plus or minus 15. fluid level is good, maybe even a touch over.
what else can i do in the mean time? how would you troubleshoot this? again loader working, rear 3 point working, pto occaasionally fires up but loses steam under load. even when it starts turning pto and cutting soon the shaft running mower slows down and stops under actual cutting load. afraid of burning up a pto clutch and did not want to run it long but kept checking different things at first and it would start turning so would go test it. sometimes it wont start turning at all. sometimes takes like a 5 count and then kicks on. what does this sound like. throws me off that the loader is working fine, will pick the tractor up etc.
next stupid question; under the tractor in the hydraulic line is a square metal box called the PTO diverter valve by the book. it has a set screw in it that goes from 0 to S. what is that for. i have never messed with it. seen it while under tractor working always wondered what it was for. never had trouble wiht pto and under the "if it aint broke dont fix it " motto i have never messed with it. anyone have a case or new holland 45 series that knows what that is i sure would appreciate teh info. book does not explain and i tried google with no luck .
again, any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. i can post pics of anything or from the service manual which is for a new holland but is exactly corrrect for the case. it tells me to check hydraulic pressure so i am waiting on a gauge to arrive so i can do that but hoping for any advice while i am waiting.
thanks in advance
