Hello I am new to the dozer world and have a quick question. I have a Old D2 Cat (1945-1950's). I can grease all the fittings but the ones on the tracks. From researching I have found out there called button heads. What kind of grease goes in these? Some one was telling me it was a really thick sticky oil. Can I just use a standard Moly. Also I have read that you need a special gun, but i have also read a standard gun is just fine. Whats the final word do i or dont I. I plan on running around tomorrow to find the coupler, fingers crossed

thanks
Michael

Mike, The button fitting does not require special grease or a gun for that matter. You can just get a button fitting for your gun. The advantage of the button fitting is that you don't have to hold it while applying grease to the fitting just slip it on the fitting and start pumping. I worked at a coal dock for 30 years and we had these fittings everywhere. Hope this helps.

You can order a button head fitting that will fit your gun through McMaster-Carr. They come in two sizes.

thanks guys for the help! It just so happened after talking to a long time customer of where i work he though he had a greaser that his recently past father used many years ago and never got rid of it after he stopped running equipment. So after i got off work i went home pulled one of the button heads off the track and high tailed it over to the address he gave me. Sure enough the adapter fit the fitting. It looks to hold about 4-5 gallons with a hand pump and a hose going off to the fitting which is on the end of a 8in extension. There was more grease on it then there was in it and she has a few dents from years of use. I asked him what he wanted for it and just let me have it. Truth be told i dont think he wanted to touch it. There was that much grease on this thing.

What kind of grease goes in this thing. the stuff that is in it IS REALLY Sticky and a little thinner then stuff i am used to. I am thinking a 0 or a 00 but cant say for sure

I worked for an excavator in the early 70's and the track on his JD track machine used one to expand the track adjusment. We had to bring one like you describe to the job and fill the side that leaked every morning till the job finished and the machine went back to the shop & replace the seal.
