Hello all,
I have a chance to purchase a Cub Cadet 1862 with 858 hours on it. It is a 92 model. It looks great for its age - real clean, obviously stored indoors, no rust, no dents, dings, etc other than a small crack in the grille where the hood was allowed to flip open too fast. I talked to the original owner who said he took great care of it and changed oil in the spring and fall. He had it for 18 years.

He said it ran great until the last year he had it. He said it all of sudden would rev up and down on its own. When running it parked the engine would want to try to race and when trying to mow, it would run fine and then lose power, and then power up again. He didn't know what was wrong so he sold it to another guy who buys them for cheap and then fixes them. I talked to that guy as well. He said the mower runs just fine and nothing is wrong with it other than it needs a new govenor. He said these are internal in the engine and to fix it would require tearing the engine apart just to get to it. He claims it is about a $400 fix. He does not have time to fix it with all his other projects so he wants to sell it and would let it go for $800. I think I could get him down to $750. It does start right up and runs good otherwise. Hydraulic steering and lift work great. No smoking while running.

So, my question is is this a good buy, even with the fix? If that is all that is wrong with it, I would have about $1200 into it. Are these a good mower? I have an old Cub Cadet 127 now that is pretty tired and in need of some costly repairs if I keep it.

I appreciate any advice. Thanks much!

This thread may give you some insight as to a possible problem:
TractorByNet thread
It is a different tractor but the same engine.

Apparently there was a design flaw in the governor for that engine.

I found on the web a Cub Cadet 1862 for sale with an "asking price" of $1200. If the repair for the one you are considering is $400, then adding that to the $750 for the tractor brings it close to that asking price I found.

oldbulldogger,

These machines are well built and heavy duty - new today would run over $4-5K for a comparable machine.

At $700 or so its a good deal, but I would verify $400 to do the governor roll pin fix - maybe buy a manual and do it yourself? I dont think you would lose many $ even if you had someone else do the work and wanted to sell it in two-three years. These models arent loosing their value if in good condition..

I have an 1811 1990 vintage since new so is 21 yrs old now and 600 hours and the engine is still running fine and it mows very well.

Most Cub Cadets of that vintage came with a Kohler engine. Replacing the governor is not that big of a problem. Kohler is good on providing manuals. Go here; Kohler Engines: Owners and Service Manuals: Manuals and Maintenance enter the requested information and review the PDF manual. You can also save the manual and print out the needed pages to guide you if you decide to undertake repairs.
