My Massey Ferguson 2660HD won't start. I spent some time with a test meter and found that the solenoid trigger wire wasn't getting voltage, I assume because of the neutral safety switch or maybe the ignition switch. I'll get that sorted out with some more time with the test meter, but in the meantime I decided to just "jump" the solenoid lugs. No luck; The starter motor spun but didn't engage the engine. I didn't have a great connection- could low voltage stop the be bendix from engaging? Or is it perhaps controlled by the solenoid? Any advice, guidance or explanation would be appreciated!

Most starter solenoids perform two functions when energized. First function is to engage the starter's drive gear to the flywheel ring gear. Once that's done, at the end of the stoke the second function is act as a switch to connect the battery to the armature brushes. When you "jump" the solenoid lugs you only perform the second of the two functions. In order to properly test (or activate) the starter you need to "jump" the terminal to which your trigger wire is connected.

Thanks; that makes sense! The trigger wire connects to a basic spade terminal on the solenoid so a jumper be easy to rig up. Now to find out why I'm not getting volatage to the solenoid when I turn the key- the hardest part is going to be to find the safety cutoff switches to test them!

There may be a relay that powers the starter solenoid that has failed.

Ran a jumper wire to the solenoid trigger and it started right up. I still haven't had time to track down the problem, but I least I can start my tractor now. Thanks for the advice.
