My 1955 International 300 Utility Tractor PTO Shaft Spins / stays engaged ALL THE TIME. The Tractor Runs Fine, Shift Fine etc. but the PTO will NOT disengage. I actually don't even use the PTO for any attachments, this tractor is my Firewood Hauler, so I haven't noticed this before and don't know how long it's been going on. The Handle that is suppose to disengage it does Nothing at all. I tried adjusting it but no luck. So I guess MY Most Important Question is, If I can't figure out why it's NOT disengaging, is it alright to operate the tractor with it engaged All The Time, since I don't use it anyway or is this a Major Problem Waiting to Happen? If it is OK to just leave it be for now , I was gonna make a Cover for it just for safety reasons.
Thanks for any help you can give me. DanO'

What process did you use to adjust? do you have the manual?

One of the adjuster screws is for the engage clutch, the other adjuster is for the brake. If either or both are not set right, it will keep spinning. If the clutch isnt releasing....yep keeps spinning. If the brake isnt set right, there is enough drag in the gears that it will keep spinning, allthough not with anything on it.

If you never use it, there is what they call a "seasonal disconnect" I think. Its on the bottom of the transmission (belly). It will look like a flat piece of metal with two holes in it and a bolt in one of the holes. Take the bolt out, rotate, and reinsert bolt in the other hole. That completely disconnects the shaft that runs to the I-PTO unit on the back. So no matter how its adjusted or what position its in, it wont work with the seasonal disconnect disconnected.

The manual I have dosen't show much at all on this. I just messed with adjustment on the lever / handle.. Honestly, I don't know what I'm Doing. If I can totally disconnect it as you instructed, that would be Great. I'll try that, But if I can't, can I just leave it engaged without any ill effect on anything else? Thanks, DanO'

Yes you can leave it engaged but it puts undo wear on the planetary gearset in there, and creates a safety hazard hooking anything up on the 3PH.

I dont remember the correct procedure on adjusting it, and dont even remember which adjuster is what. BUT, going from memory.....back both adjusters off so you can spin the PTO by hand pretty easy with the lever in any position. (tractor off ofcourse). Then start tightening the engage clutch until its to the point you cannot spin it by hand when the lever is about 1/2 engaged. Then once disengaged, tighten the brake so you cannot spin it by hand, then give it a little more.

Thanks So much for the help and putting me on the right track. You description of the adjustments is pretty darn close, as you can see in this Video I just found on Line. Figured I'd post the link here in case anyone else had this problem. I've heard it was common in these 300U tractors. Anyway, Thanks again, DanO'

So did the adjustment work or have you tried it yet?

In either case, if you never use the PTO, I'd still disconnect it under the trans

Been watching the post for a while now I'm in a position I own two 300 utility tractors. Having the same issue with both. I am trying to run a rotor tiller. I engage the PTO and drop the tiller part of the time the tiller will run fine then it will bog and a squealing noise comes from the tractor. The clutch on the shaft doesn't slip it seems the PTO is slipping. I do have the IPTO on both with TA on both. When the tiller gets to where you would think it should start digging the PTO slips. The tractor motion is not affected at all, tines just stop turning until I lift the tiller. Any thoughts on this?
