Hello all,
I recently bought a nice old narrly fork tine grapple bucket, I will be using my rear hydraulics for control. I am not going to change this since I have weighed out the options and have done lots of reading on the forums and have decided on this setup. My tractor is a MX5100 HST with FEL.

I have bought 2 8ft lines to get to the quick disconnect of the FEL, I will be using 6 lines total since I would like the ability of easy removal of loader and bucket swap. I have also read up on the pros and cons and differences in using sealer vs teflon tape and the dangers involved in both, I am not trying to debate this since we already have a thread on this.

Ok so I bought some fittings on line which I have posted the spes. and some line locally at tractor supply, I also needed some 90's and 45's that i purchased locally at a well known hydraulics dealer on my departure i had ask the guy at the counter what his recommendation was for sealing the fittings and he recommended Boss 245 so i bought some from him 17 bucks.

I assembled fittings with a dab on the end 1 thread in he said that's all that was needed, I installed the rest then tested and they all leaked. I slightly tightened with the same results. I then decided to put this of for a couple of days and did some research here and read the long posts about sealer vs tape and decided to clean then try tape, because it was the other option.

To my surprise this sealed them up and they do not leak, but i feel they are not on deep enough and I do not want to strip them I have posted some pics plus specs , i just want to be sure before i order the rest. thanks I ll post some pics of the Frankenstein grapple later.

Okay, you have told us what you did and why and that you are not going to change anything. What was the question?

How many times did you wrap it and did you wrap it clockwise of counter clockwise looking at it from the end?

I wrap mine 3-4 times and clockwise so the tape doesn't back up when installing.

I am still concerned about the connection, did not really feel right. Concerned that the fittings or line I purchased is junk or does not work together. Did you look at the pictures of the connection, does it look like they are set deep enough? I fully pressurized the lines and they have not leaked.

wrapped them twice in the right direction 1 thread in.

That should work. I wouldn't over tighten it or you might crack something. They seem to be in there a little shallow, but if it's not leaking, it's probably okay.

There is no magic bullet for everything. Teflon tape works good, and has been and is still being used. The problem with the Teflon, is the residue after undoing the connection. Some people just don't clean out all the left over Teflon. If you do a clean job every time, you won't have the problem of pieces of Teflon jamming up valves, etc. Some people swear by something else, and others just use Teflon as it has been used. It is up to the owners. When purchasing new hyd equipment, a lot of it comes with Teflon tape or paste installed in the fittings.

I think your connections look typical. NPT is a tapered thread and with manufacturing tolerances as they are some will thread together further than others. Agree with JJ on the teflon tape. Keep it back one thread and if you take it apart, you need to clean ALL the old tape off. I usually use a Loctite paste sealant but have used tape without problems.
