I recently purchased a Kubota l3400 and need advice preparing my yard for my house, I had 4 acres of pine trees cleared for a house, my builder has sown 50 feet out around house, but I need advice on how to prep the rest, my father in law has ripped the rest and wants to disc then run a cultipacker over it, but I want a smooth yard, I've seen pulverizers? What do I need? Any advice would be appreciated, also I live in NC, red clay

Thanks Eric

Well from what I hear a Harley rake is probably the best yard maker there is.

If you don't want to rent one of those you can disk it and drag it with tires, fence, log, bed springs...etc untill you get it smooth to your taste then throw out some seed and run the cultipacker on it and water the heck out of it.

Thanks for the help, my father in law wants to disc, but I wanted to get a consensus, because I have no idea what the best method is, how would I benefit from a pulverizer?

I have never used a pulverisor so my experience with them is 0, there are folks here that do so try a search if nobody chimes in with a little help.

I've got a Lienbach 72" pulverizer. It's a very simple, quick way to prep a well graded yard for seeding. If the ground is severely compacted, a pulverizer won't do much to change that. Over-tilling is bad news for planting grass. Grass likes a nice FIRM seedbed with no air pockets. If the soil structure is in decent shape, you're better off not loosening the soil real deep. In that case, a pulverizer is ideal.

If you want a perfectly smooth seed bed, go rent a harley rake. Awesome piece of equipment. You can usually rent one for about $250 a day...here's a pic, wish I had taken a before shot.
