Is it possible that your 2460 is out of fuel? Revving up sporadically is a sign of a diesel sucking air.
If it is a diesel.:D

i suppose that is possible, but i just put a few gallons in last weekend and i swore to myself i would never let that happen again.the gauge doesnt work, so I'll see if that is it. i sure hope so. i dread the task of priming the fuel system, but i hope that's it. if i pull an injector and turn it over and fuel comes out, then that would eliminate that possibility right?

I am by far no mechanic but just went through problems with the fuel system last fall. Left tractor setting and when I went to start it I checked fuel and it was low but should have made it in. Had to go down a hill which allowed the fuel to run to one side of the tank and not get any to the fuel line.

Ended up having to replace the fuel pump, filters while I was at it. Then for good measure a ring broke in the engine. Now having hydraulic problems. The output pipe from the pump was taken loose. An o-ring goes in and have replaced with one but not sure if it is the right size. Supposed to be. I ordered the whole o-ring kit but none of them were marked. Top of hydraulic pump leaks bad. Where the metal pipe screws down their is an indention that looks like it is for an o-ring. Only other choice is to lay one on top of the pump.

If you ever have to remove the pressure line from the pump be careful putting the screws back it. They are soft and will shear in a heartbeat.

Hope this helps. I did have to replace an injection pump a few years back. Threw parts out the side. Best I remembered it reved up then shut down. If you have to purchase any major parts check fleabay. Saved a bunch on an alternator I had to buy.
