Tractor
Ford 198?
Ok, been lurking around since my last post on my tractor aqusition<sp>.

Since it's cooled off some here, I've had more time to go through the beast.
After repairing one leak in the power steering cylinder, seems I've got another one, on the control valve end, man, seals for these cylinders at the local NH dealer are outrageous!

Anyway, a different steering issue has me puzzled, in the photo, you see underneath the front end where the axle connect to the body, where the shiny screw is sticking out is a 1 1/4" hole about 4" deep. When I turn the steering wheel or the tractor bounces up and down, this section moves around and is real loose.

There are no threads in this big hole, so, I don't know what or if something does go in there.

I tried and the only thing I could find that I had that fit, was a 3/4" black pipe coupling, but I only had one of this particular brand.

That's the first of many up coming little issues with my new (34 yrs old)
toy.

Thanks

I'll see if i have any exploded diagrans for the 3xxx here at work.. probably not.. but in any case.. looks like a good place for a kingpin and bushing to me.

Thanks Soundguy,

That's just what I need, seems the NH dealer here doesn't carry very much
for old Fords, but can order most parts though.

The hole is going into the oil pan, so the only thing I have that fits is a steel gas pipe fitting (coupling), funny, I have tons of gas pipe fittings, but only one 3/4 peice that fit perfectly, just isn't long enough, 1 1/4", so for the time being, I added a 3" nipple, then screw in a stop plate to keep it from escaping again.

Now, I'm trying to figure out the size of bushing to fill the gap around the
spindles, seems they're worn down pretty bad and pretty uneven too.

Also, looking at the space above and below the spindle, where the axle connects, about an inch, and was wondering if I could put either a
bearing or a spring, what do you think?

Wow.. now that's a gap... Looks deffinately like a bushing needs to go there.. some kind of spacer... something Wish I had a manual that specifically covered the industrial models.. it would be a big help. The axles .. especially front were a key difference on the industrials.

I'm going to email your pics to a couple buddies with industrial exp.. and see what they come up with.

My regular 3xxx manuals don't even show that industrial axle.. etc..

Ok.. I thought it wasn't going to pan out.. all my 3400 lit listed only the fixed front axle.. then i just happened to look over at the 3500 lit, and there is what I'm pretty sure is your axle , in the 3500 section. Including the front pedistal, and all.

I printed the pdf's off... I'd be glad to fax them to you if you will PM me with a fax number.

( I also have the diagrams of the 3400 fixed axle.. though i doubt you need them.. it doesn't match your hardware. )

Looks like you are in luck.. It apepars that the bushing and seal for the front axle spindle is still serviced, as well as the front center axle/bushing assembly.

Wow.. I'm not sure how that tractor lost all those parts and was still working!!

I know, was wondering why is was so hard to keep it going straight when
driving down the road, I looked like a 2 day drunk,
but that's good news that it can still be serviced, so,
I'll get you that fax number this afternoon, since I need a toner refill,
and let you send me that info so I can get this machine going again,
into the 40's tonight, got to get the firewood ready.

Thanks again.

I took this question and my ideas on the parts to a dedicated ford board and we ran it around on the table a bit. At least one onther member saw those same pics over here, and is in agreement with me, that you actually have a 3500 and not a 3400. I've not seen a 3400 with anything other than an arch style solid axle.. same for another fellow.. etc.

Ya might check your paperwork you got with the tractor.. or the model number and sn, and just re-verify what you got... however it really does look like, from a parts and sheet metal issue.. a 3500.. etc.

I got ya a 1 page exploded diagram showing front axle and PS setup, and 3 pages of parts listing.. SLooks like much of it is still serviced.. or at least was when i got this manual anyway. I'm sure pins and bushings could be custom turned at a machine shop if it came to it.. and for the seal.. all you need is width, ID and OD.. so that wouldn't be a problem either if CNH says they are NLS.

let me know when you get the fax up and I'll send them over.

Ok Soundguy,

Got the fax machine ready, the number is 615-867-2181, it's also my business
line, so you'll get the Mr. Kool message after 4 rings, then you can send the fax(es).

The only paper work I received was an IT shop manual for a 2000, 3000, 4000
and alot of it looks like my tractor, but you maybe be on the right track about
it being a 3500.

I believe these are the righ number, still hard to see even after hours of scrubbing with paint remover:

Model: C50I2K
Serial: C355470
Prod: 2K31B

But, will double check later on.

Thanks again,
Paul
