Chipper Need opinions on new chipper.

Hi:

Looking for advice on chippers.

I have 3 acres with some old trees and trimmings that I want to chip and use. I am looking at a 3ph type for a 22hp tractor. The address below will take you to the manufacturer. The thing sells for $2,150 plus $400 for the self feeder and it is the "BX42" model. It seems to have a decent capacity?

You might do a search on "Jinma Chippers" on here - don't have one myself, but people indicate they are good value. ALso, is the horsepower total or PTO? It would be helpful if you specified PTO horsepower.

I have the Jinma rated for 6" and had a feed roller. The unit has worked fine except for the feed roller belt popping off a couple times when something got stuck. Mine gets a regular workout with ~8 wooded acres. Whatever you buy get the feed roller unless you want to loose some weight.

I burn everything 3" and bigger for the most part. However if you have some spurs sticking out off a 3" piece that 6" limit can get hit pretty quick. While you would not have the horsepower to run a 6" log striaght thru you can stop the feed for a couple secconds, feed some more and repeat.

Tractor is rated at 19.5 pto hp.

Mine is rated at 25 pto and wanted to see what it could do. It will run a 4" anything right thru. It will really grunt on a 5" wet or hardwood log. A 6" log will pull the tractor rpm half way down after several feet and would stall it if I didn't let off the feed.

I suspect a 4" log would act the same way on your tractor as a 6" does on mine.

Thanks. Jinma is an option I can pusue they look like a good machine. Had a devil of time finding a dealer up here though.

Will also certainly consider the feed roller, could lose some weight but thats not much fun.

HI,
I use a SALSCO 600 on MY BX.Only does like a 4 inch stick.I like the top feed,gravity does the work.If you have a very long maximum size stick,you can stall the tractor.I cut my firewood right down to 3 inch so it chips what i need.However,you need to cut alot of the crotches out of the brush,some species such as beech and poplar are bears[the branchs come straight out]
Even with the horse power limitations,i would opt for a 6 inch,if my tractor could turn it.You wouldnt have to cut the brush quite so fine.One would just have to remember not to feed large peices in it,for the tractor couldnt take it.Just my 2 cents
However i like the ruggedness of the SALSCO,AND IT HAS PROVEN ITS RELIABILITY. I have chipped the brush from 15-20 cord of wood by now.I think ill keep it,one just has to pay attention when limbing trees,to cut out big 90 degree crotchs.
My woodlot is slightly larger than your 3 acres,but it looks great so far all thinned out and no brush piles

Thanks for the comments escavader, the Salsco is another decent looking chipper. Don't know if they are available up here though, will look further on the web site.

Your comments on the sizing and HP were interesting as I think your pto HP is likely close to what I will be using(Agco st22A). I will be inquiring with my dealer on the 6" option, it would save some cutting at the spurs but I have a feeling it may be too much for my tractor if it can stall a 25 pto hp tractor.
