a local farmer has a toolbar with 4 international 295 planters on it. he is willing to sell it for a reasonable price. it looks like a JD 71 clone. pretty much the same exact design, and has pretty much the same look. I would like to know if anyone has any info on these, pros, cons, parts available, quality, etc. thanks in advance.

They were in fact, International Harvesters answer to the Deere #71. Plates are harder to find but they're not impossible to find. Replacement parts are HARD to come by. IH sold about 1 planter for every 15 Deere sold during the years when the #71 and the 295 went head to head. Not sure how many 295's were built, but not many. 71's were like ants at a picnic. They were everywhere. #71's were adaptable to many crops. 295's were a little less versatile. However, they were good units for corn, soybeans, peanuts, and cotton. Those crops were the bulk of the planter market.

Unless you're about to plant hundreds of acres on a yearly basis, those 295's should serve you well though. Ask the seller if he has any spares, any manuals, and any advice to keep them in working order.

given that info, would you pay 500 for 4 units in pretty good shape, mounted on a 12ft toolbar?

If they're in working condition, maybe so. Not an extreme bargain, but not nearly as much as you'de expect to pay for Deere #71's either. $125 per row. It's not UNcommon to see #71's or #25 Deere units sell for $250 to $400 per row these days. Many #71's selling $500 to $600 per row.

It really depends on the area that you are in as to the availablility of either make. I think they both made new model planters about ten years ago from melted scrap. I don't know to many people that really bought those units other then someone who needed really precision planting in the late 60's. Depending on your area or what your needs are there are newer plateless that are available for about the same money. They were as good as any in their day, we sold them to people planning to plant sugar beets when they came into our area. If perchance they are the runner opener they are expensive to replace.

there are 2 units mounted on a toolbar, for sale on ebay right now and they are up to $430, with over a day left.
