My FIL has grudgingly agreed to "lend" me his 9N to help with the chores on our hobby farm. I've got it in my garage right now and I'm just going over things (it's been sitting for over 2 years under a tarp..) to see what problems are likely right now or what might be an upcoming problem.

Can see a couple problems right off the bat - tie rods and ball joint ends from the steering arms.

And I need a pto shaft.

Just ordered the repair manual from eBay. Hope to see it this next week.

Looking for good outlets for repair/replacement parts. Any recommendations would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Oh yah; I need a new seat - bad!! :( Moisture collected right in the center where the 2 bolts mount and everything is just about coming apart!)

Hi AK,
YTMag has them:
Discount Tractor Parts and Manuals for Older and Antique Tractors
The advantage of this is that it is 1 3/8 " instead of the 1 1/8 that came with the tractor. A very simple upgrade. IIRC remove a clip, remove the seal, slide out the old shaft, slide in the new shaft, reinstall seal and retainer. Of course it was 25 years ago, so I may be a little fuzzy on the details.

If it's the 105$ unit.. which is what I WOULD reccomend.. it's just 'remove 4 bolts.. slide old shaft and retainer out, clean up gasket area, slid ein new shaft and retainer with new gfasket, and put the 4 bolts back in. 15 minute job.. park nose down and you don't even have to drain the 5g of oil.

i would not piece it with a new shaft, bearing and seal and wear ring. will cost nearly as much, and be a whole lot more work.

if the pto shaft is twisted.. post back for more drastic replacement procedures.. have sawsall ready :)

ps.. what's wrong with the old pto shaft? specifically?

Appreciate the replies. I want to use the tractor on a Kuhn single-rotor hay rake. Initially, I figured the shaft wouldn't fit right. Might not be the case...

I just got a manual for the tractor (this morning). I need to do some tinkering with it and figure out what's what -- ya know?

But the steering and the seat definitely need some attention. And the clutch doesn't always seem to fully release/disengage the tranny. Takes a few attempts to get it into gear without some grinding.

Thanks again.

the oem pto shaft is a shorty 1 1/8 new standard is 1 3/8

there is a sheetmetal sleeve bushing some sell.. but avoid it.. it's junk.

instead get the stub extender that bushes the pto shaft up to the correct OD and length.

clutch sounds oily/sticky.

make sure the bellhousing drain with the cotter pin in it is open.. or oil will collect in the dry area of the clutch.

If there's nothing really wrong with the shaft other than the spline size, you should be able to get an overrunning clutch with the larger output size

You'll probably want one anyway

That's probably a real good idea... Without a "live" pto - that hay rake could maybe push me a little farther in one direction than I'd like to go!

Thanks.

Ordered most of the part's from Yesterdaystractors.com. Good prices and the shipping was very reasonable, too.

Should be here in a day or two. New seat, seat cover, pto shaft kit and extra gaskets and split rings - oil filter's too.

Gonna wait on the ball joints until I can take 'em off and see if the balls are all worn out or if I just need new caps, etc. Likely have to replace the whole shootin' match but need to sort it out.

Dropped both front and rear blades and the track system. It looks like a tractor, now!!! :D

Good info -- Thanks.

the tie rod ends and draglinks do not come apart. if they are loose.. you just repalce them.

no real.. ball joints on this type of a machine.. :)
