I've looked at all the ratchet chain binders on Northern Tool, Harbor Freight, Amazon and Ebay and wonder how reliable these may be considering most are probably made in China. It do not mind paying more money for a guaranteed quality product that I can assume is safer. Any ideas where to look on the Internet? Thanks...

I have a set of 4 ratchet binders. 2 from HF and 2 from TSC. They are all made in China. That being said, I have used them for over 10 years now without problem. Just have to keep the threads greased and the ratchet mechanism lubed. You'd have to do that no matter who makes them. I think AW Direct sells USA made ones.

I buy mine from my NH or local Kubota dealer. Both carry the same binders and they go on sale from time to time. I don't use grease, but do use silicone spray lube to keep things working nicely.

Ratchet binder is pretty much just a lever, wedge and a screw. 3 of the simple machines, kind of hard to mess that up.

I have the HF 3/8" ratchet binders and they work well. I have racked them down tight enough to squat my 8500 pound tractor and never any problem. The chain links on them are at least 5/8" diameter and rated at 5200 Lbs. (same as a 3/8" Gr 70 chain) I wouldn't hesitate to use them on anything my 12K rated trailer will haul. I do remember that the ratchet binders are higher rated capacity than the breakover type also.

I bought two of these binders a few years ago. http://www.thecrosbygroup.com/html/en-US/pdf/pgs/252.pdf They're made in Longview, Texas. I pass their plant frequently. I have several Lebus breakover binders that are probably over 40 years old and show no sign of wear. You can buy these online but you can probably find them at a truck rigging dealer. I bought mine a Dealers Truck Equipment. These binders aren't cheap, you'll pay over $125 each for them.

Harbor Freight for me. That is the kind of stuff that they do well. Floor jacks, chains, binders and drill presses. Probably about 1/2 price of most places.
