Hello all. This is my first post on TractorByNet. I've been lurking for awhile now on this site and decided to try this site out. There seems to be a lot more people on this site compared to others.

I'm renewing some gaskets on the front of my engine on my 961 Diesel. I believe it is a 58. In the picture you will see a plate and pipe on the crankshaft. This was put in (previous owner) to keep the hub from hitting the timing cover. If I assemble without the pipe the hub hits the timing cover.

What could be the reasons for this? Is it the cover, hub, or crankshaft? How should I identify this root cause for the pipe?

Thanks.

Randall

I don't know what contrls the crankshaft thrust in this engine but that appears to be the root cause of your problem. Some engines use a thrust washer system and others use a sprecial main bearing shell. You need to measure the crankshaft fore and aft motion and compare that to the spec. If it's out of spec you need to get it back into spec by dealing with the crankshaft thrust bearing. If you don't have a shop manual, get one because you'll need it for this.

ditto what jerry said.

I'm at work and away from my parts manual.. but you can hit the parts diagrams for the red tiger online at new holland.

I'm on a mobile divice, so hard for me to manipulate pics.. etc.

Thanks guys. FWIW...my local tractor place told me the plate is an oil slinger. It's listed on New Holland's site but not pictured. Slinger, Crankshaft Front Oil, Start Year: 01/01/1958 The pipe is a spacer between the crankgear and hub since the diesel engine doesn't have a govener. Does that all sound correct? Here another link that I found on a diff thread / site.
