If it doesn't need levelling, or re-planting, I wouldn't disc it.

If you cut up the ground (assumming it is sod) to chop up the dead grass, you will be opening it up to all kinds of latent weed seeds that likely you will not like. I would either burn the dead grass, or just wait until you can chop it with the rotary cutter. Thistles, rag weed, dock, berry bushes, and all kinds of things are just waiting for some ground to open up so they can grow big and tall. Maybe not all these in the Arlington area, but it all depends on what you want to do with the ground.

IMO - Mow or burn. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BWS, Discs usually aren't very good over heavy vegetation, especially grass, unless heavy with an aggressive cutting angle. The time of the year can make a difference with soil moisture. Also mowing helps.
You'll see 2 types of discs out there. One is made with angle iron and is cheaper and lighter. The heavier ones is usually made with a tubular frame. Even at that you may have to add weight (200 - 300 #) to get performance out of a 5 to 7' disc. Big blades and scrappers or hanging chains between disc blades to prevent trash/mud filling in are helpful and add weight. I have a disc and a tiller. I use the tiller, maybe after brush cutting the vast majority of time. The price of a disc would get you half way to a tiller ! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Hello BWS--To give you some idea of what is being discussed--Here is a picture of a New low end disc harrow that was mentioned earlier--price runs under $500--The heavier models with tubular framing will cost about $150 additional--Ken Sweet

I would go along with "Beenthere". Using a disc does not work well on tall grass. In fact, anytime I have used a disc, unless it was worked soil already I have not been happy with it. Last fall I worked some sleu areas for my father in law using a large tractor, around 300 Hp and a large disc. Even the heavy disc did not break up the ground. The disc just floated over the grass. We had to go back with a chisel plow to break it up. I have burned grass before and you wouldn't believe how nice it comes back. Now if it is really rough, then spend your money on a tiller or rent a tiller. Most rent-all places have them.

My neighbor has a disc and even ground that has not been disturbed for a few years you can't break up much with the disc

Just my 2 cents worth

I agree with the other guys; a disk on tall grass will probably not do a satisfactory job. Even when they intend to disk fields, all the farmers I know mow them first if they have either tall grass or stalks left from a crop. And you can be pretty sure a real farmer isn't going to take the time and burn the diesel fuel to mow first unless he knows it's necessary. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

BWS-Is the Tall grass down completly on the groud or still 6-8 inches vertical? If it is completely down, most brush hogs may not be able to pick it up very well unless you run the cutter very close to the ground (below the bend) and the Roto tillers could wind the long grass stems up in the tines and cause jamming, if the grass is very long?--Ken Sweet

I don't know how small they make offset disks but
the larger ones will cut 6-8" deep (instead of plowing).
Timber co. use this to reclaim clear cut areas before
replanting.
A 4' may be all u can pull if anyone makes one this small.
Find someone local that has one and pay them to do the
first pass.
