Hi all I am new to the site but i have done alot of reading here and there seems to be alot of good info to be found, So I am hopeing someone can help me. The problem I am haveing is when I lock the rear diff i get a poping noise thats pretty loud and is worse when i turn the wheels left or right if I am going straight there is no poping sound. Fluid is good in the rear end and the only thing that i have done to the rear end is to replace the left hand side cv boot at the trans. When I did this I removed the female end of the cv assemble that goes into the trans because at the time I did not see the ring clip that held the cv assemble together. I got the boot replaced and reassembled everything back together the way it came out. Did I test the diff lock then? no and everything seemed fine until the other day I had to use the diff lock and that was when i noticed the loud binding/poping sound. I did drain the oil in the rear end to see if there was any metal in it and there was none, so I am at a loss and I really hope someone can help me out on this one. Oh the gator is a xuv 620i and it is out of warranty.

maybe the cable got snagged and pulled it out not allowing it to engage properly. it is a fairly simple system.

I wonder if you have experience locking the rear differential? This should be done while stopped, or going slow and straight. It is a mechanical lock, so if you were stuck and spinning one wheel when you simultaneously tried to flip the rear diff. lock lever forward, you could damage the locking mechanism. If this is what happened, then maybe you broke something. If you only hear a single clunk and then the differential locks, I think everything is normal. Sometimes it does make a clunk as it engages. You can also hear a clunk as it disengages sometimes.
The front locker is electronic and silent.
Hope this helps. Are you the original owner or did you just get the unit? If you don't have the owner's manual you can find a pdf file online.

I have lots of experience with using the diff lock and I know it makes the clunk sound when you disengage it. the sound that I am hearing is more like a ratcheting sound and it does it when you lock the rear diff it's at it's worst when you are turning one way or the other putting the trans axle in a bind. I have also never locked the diff while the machine was moving i always stop to lock it. I bought the gator new, Also I was a service tech for five years for the dealership we had here in town which sold Deere, Kubota, and New Holland. I bought the gator the same time I quit and they hadn't even been out that long so I am not to familiar with the xuv series and was hoping there was a tech which visited this site often that could maybe steer me in the right direction. The reason I quit was to go into law enforcement.

Yes, you have faiure to engage the differential locking pawls, either because of binding with the release cable or mechanism or internally.
Sorry for asking the "stupid" questions earlier but I didn't know your background. Hopefully the cable is binding, I'm sure you tried to trace it back and check on that already.
Good luck, I'll keep searching for more information.

I have check the engagement cable and there does not appear to be any binding. I am starting to think the problem is internal also. I did pull both CV joints and from what i can tell there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with them besides some minor wear. I thought I might get lucky and find that one of the CV joints had started to fail but that doesn't seem to be the case. Pulling the trans on this thing does look like it is going to be a bit of pain but if that is what it is going to take then i guess I'll have no choice but to do just that. Oh and thanks for the replies guys.
