Tractor Newbie...I think I have a serious problem that I am hoping to get some feedback on. YM155D with loader and rototiller, purchased last summer with about 730 hours. Ran great. Bought a rear snow blade a month ago and have been happily clearing my long driveway (lots of snow this winter). A couple of days ago, was pushing snow and all of a sudden lost some power, running rough, bluish white smoke instead of black. Shut it off, checked fluids, looked fine, so restarted. Acted normal, smoke black, power restored. But did notice that the traditional 2cyl diesel clack/clack noise at low engine speed seemed louder. Finished, put away in garage.
Got up this am with more snow. Tried to start, it seemed normal, almost fired up, with black smoke but battery was weak and I gave up. Checked fluids again, radatior was down. Added about 1.5 litres antifreeze water (40/60). Put some jumper cables on my car, tried to start. Now symptoms are.....seems to turn over very easily, white smoke only, and won't fire at all.

I suspect I may have overheated the other day, perhaps damaged head gasket or something. Perhaps first try this am with rad down, couldn't get enough water so wanted to start, after topping up rad, now has access to water...ergo white smoke.

Any ideas?
thanks Frank :(

California is probably right, in that it is a head gasket, that would be my first guess. Did you notice any bubbles in the radiator when it was running? However, it could be an injector problem too. If the injector is staying open and dribbling fuel it it will also allow air from compression to travel back up line and put air in your system. Try an injector bleed to see if you get air there.

Pull the compression release to make sure that if there is watter on the piston that you do not "lock it up". Water is NOT compressible.

Sorry for the problems especially when there is snow to be pushed.;)

You might even be able to see them now while cranking--but more likely the leak in the gasket is between cylinders. You can check with a "leak down test" to hear where the air is going.

Thanks for the feedback. Here is some more information. I did not see any white scum in the oil so although I was thinking head gasket also, I decided after a day (and another foot of snow in my driveway) to try and start it again. It started and seemed to run as normal (although again, the 2 cyl diesel clack/clack noise seemed a little louder, but I may be imagining that). I got busy plowing. Then the same thing happened as last time.......loss of power, trouble keeping revs up.......almost seemed like it was going to stall, but I kept nursing it. There was bluish white smoke for a bit.....then after 30 seconds or so of running like that, the revs began to increase, the smoke color cleared and it seemed to run fine....(no smoke with no load, black smoke if pushing hard). I was a little nervous since I did not want to stall in my narrow driveway and maybe never get it going again, so I increased the idle throttle a bit and kept clearing snow. It ran fine for the next 20-30 minutes. I finished and put it away. Checked the oil.....no evidence of water.

Could this be injector problem? I am mechanically inclined but have no diesel experience before buying this tractor. MJP....not sure what you mean by try an injector bleed.

could it be anything else?
thanks
Frank

How long since you changed the air & fuel filters?

Always best to start with the inexpensive stuff first.

A good lesson......to check the inexpensive things first. I found the fuel filter with about 2/3rds water in it. So that is good news, except now my 45gallon drum of diesel is suspect and it is about 3/4 full. Maybe I can shorten the pump hose so that it sucks higher up in the barrel.....or would it be better to just save it for burning brush.

thanks

I would use it, just pump it through a water separator filter. Fuel is TOO expensive to basically throw out 3/4 of a barrel. The problem is that water can mix with diesel and that can create all kinds of problems for you in the pump, injectors and elsewhere. It will take frequent checks now to make sure that you keep water out of the system.

You do not happen to have a barrel with a barrel-pump outside do you? With the change in temp and a partly full barrel will actually such moisture in and will form moisture inside the barrel. I know--an early lesson from a day gone by! It needs a proper water proof cover AND a water separator filter.

When you first were giving the symptoms I thought that there might be air in the injector lines (from an injector not closing properly.) and I was simply suggesting that you bleed the air out of the lines by loosening the lines at the injectors.

Live and learn!!
