Anyone have a particular brand/model of turbo timer for my JD 85F? I didn't just want to slap on an automotive timer without first looking into it. It needs to be weatherproof and be able to hold up to dusty conditions. I can't really find what I'm looking for.

Why would you need such a thing ?

Have a look at page 30 in the ISSPro catalog here:

Thanks Rswyan! Very, very cool catalog! I see other stuff in there that could save $$ avoiding catastrophic breakdowns. With 12 tractors, it gives 12 operators 12 separate opportunities to send me to the bank ( 12 separate times!). At any rate, I don't know if a turbo timer would prevent someone from winding up the turbo to max speed and then shutting the engine off, causing the turbo to run dry for a time. Never a good thing.

One thing that's helped save money is putting back-up alarms on the parking brake handle. The alarm is active once the operator sets the brake with the ignition on. Brake jobs are $700.00/side. I can't tell you how many times I've caught guys driving along with the parking brake partially engaged, driving along just as happy as you can be. Oops, there goes another trip to the bank!

You're quite welcome

They make some nice stuff.

I have 6 of their gauges (voltmeter, oil pressure, oil temp, transmission fluid temp, turbo boost, and a pyro for exhaust temp) in my work truck .... of course, with the EGT/pyro I don't really need turbo timer, because I can see the exhaust temp before I shut off the engine ... I did have to drill and tap the exhaust manifold for the thermocouple tho' ...:D

Like I said - they make nice stuff ... but it's not cheap.

Shop around on the 'net ... you can find some deals.

Take a look at the R4130 - that ought to do what you want - it controls engine shutoff via a preset "safe" exhaust gas temp - the engine will continue to run - even if you've turned the key off - until the exhaust gas temp gets low enough ..... and then shut off. You will have to drill and tap the manifold for the thermocouple.

Yeah ... I don't know how many times I done that .... but it's been a lot ... and sometimes it's been for a considerable distance :mur:

If the turbo is designed right shutting down at full speed and load isn't a problem. It's done every day on unattended industrial engines and sometimes several times every day with no adverse effects.

sounds like you need to hire some better operators who know what they are doing, instead of bolting a bunch of "babysitters" to your equipment

If what you're trying to prevent is damage while the turbo spools down from full speed how about an accumulator to release oil after the engine is shut down.
