I'm building a pole barn where one corner would be under the edge of a large oak's canopy. The only limb that would be above the barn is dead, so I plan to cut it off. (very dead; wouldn't be surprised if it just fell off but of course don't wanna wait!)

The limb is about 30' above ground. It's about 12" diameter where I need to cut it off. Right now there's nothing below it to worry about.

Can you suggest a way I can get up that high so I can cut it off?

I have a Stihl pole saw that will help conquer some of the height, but not all of it.

30 feet is way high..... if you dont feel comfortable climbing the tree.
1) rent a lift and cut it into small sections
2)hire a tree trimmer with a bucket truck.

If it is "very dead" you should be able to cast a line up there and pull a rope up and use a tractor or truck to pull it off, just stay out from under it and go slow. Another option is the redneck branch saw, cut an old chain from a chain saw and tie it between two lengths of rope, throw it over and pull the ends back and forth in a sawing motion till it cuts thru, before you laugh...it works in a pinch.

I'll call to see what a lift rental runs. Thank you.

Hey that's worth a try. It is "very dead" seemingly all the way to the junction where it sprouted off its "parent branch" (or whatever it's called).

The "parent branch" won't be over the barn, BTW.

$120-$160ish/day in my area for a 30' trailer type boom lift. Well worth it to avoid breaking my neck

Aaron Z

I didn't even know they made a trailer type boom lift! Thanks! I could drive down & pick that up myself

It may be obvious but however you get up there, e.g. boom truck, ladder, etc., be careful when you cut. You will want to make sure the branch doesn't swing back on you and knock you off whatever you're standing on. Even a dead oak branch will have the weight to do it.
