Still looking since thats half the fun!
Hi, I was wondering if these trees look sick to you all?

Pics are kinda hard to tell but I think the trees look "thinned" out almost due to dead branches and no leaves. These are White Oak trees We are lcoated in NE Oklahoma. These trees are close to a small creek (wet weather) but fills up occasionally to the bank where the trees are located about 250 ft away 8-12ft elevation change.

Is it normal for trees to have this many dead branches. Keep in mind they are about 15 matures white oaks on the property and almost all of them look this way.

I never had a place with mature trees so I know little about them. If you have any more knowledge or need more pics to help identify the problem I will be glad to take them and post here on TBN.

As you can see the right side of the tree is less dense with leaves and has dead branches

Trees just get old and limbs die. Looks like some limb pruning could be in order. I think they are okay, just maturing.
How long have you been observing these trees?
Did they change all of a sudden?
Has there been any landscaping near these trees over the root system?

I thought the pic size limit was 100,000. Yours are 2X bigger than that, and wonder why? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Except for the last shot it looks like most of the dead limbs are in the interior of the trees. These limbs may have just been shaded out by other limbs over the years. Some kinds of trees hang on to their dead branches for a long time, while others drop them quickly. Limbs that have died in the last year or so will usually still have their smallest twigs on them. The longer they are dead, the larger the branches that fall off.

On your last shot, it looks like those limbs have been dead awhile.

I would be concerned if leaves started falling or if the foliage became thin in live limbs.

Your local extesnion forester can answer your questions.

I could be wrong, but I think those are actually Post Oak or Blackjack Oak, both of these species I refer to as Scrub oak. I have been thinning out my property of alot of these and leaving the white and red oaks. The best way is to look at the leaves. All 4 of the species I refered to have distinct leaves, even thou everything else looked the same. The scrub oak has a tendency to be shorter, smaller, and very dense with lots of dead limbs on the interior.
Good Luck, Dave
