I'm aware of how long it's going to take to fill the pond. Even at 20 gpm I think if i figured correctly it would take about 90 days or so. There's a fairly substantial drainage area with a bowl-shaped run off area on 3 sides of pond. With several days of rain and few downpours, the water in pond is only about 1/3 covered on bottom now.
I'm on hold pattern now with road to pond and drilling area too wet and muddy for them to come back. Drilling rig still parked there.
when owner of drillling company returns i'm going to have him pull it up and start a new drill. as to where.....still not 100% sure but I it will be where i want it and not where he wants it.

I have a cedar growing about 100 ft from where he's drilling and there's not another cedar anywhere on the property. And i know cedar has to be near a water source. So that might be a choice.

Sory for the late post, I've been out of town for the past 7 days.

~44,000 feet in an acre, ~7.5 gallons in a cubic foot.

An acre foot of water ~330,000 gallons of water.

2 gpm = 120 gph = 2880 gallons/day.

330,000 / 2880 = 115 days to get an acre foot of water from a 2gpm well.

And you still have to account for evaporation and leakage.....

Hi,

I guess I'm a cement head, but...

as for running the water for the house down to pond...the pipe would have to go through a rather heavily wooded area on a steep slope. Would be a heck of a lot of digging and pretty hard. Cant get tractor in there.

I keep thinking that there must be a way to use the well that you have at your house. Like for example, you could even run plastic pipe [the kind that comes on a reel, more like a hose] on top of the ground in the places where you can not get the tractor in. With a good flow it may not freeze when the temps drop below freezing at night, and you could just forget about using it during the cold winter months.

They use this stuff in camp grounds and apparently freezing does not cause it to burst...If your house is above the pond, which I got the impression it is, you could let the pipe drain by gravity and freezing would be a non issue...

Just a thought...

Just saw the update on the countrybynet side...

Smokymtnman:

Went over to where I had originally wanted to drill and went down 150 ft and hit 15 gpm and has about a 85 ft head on it and still rising as we left. hoping it just flows on over but that would be too much luck for this old boy.

Glad that things are working out...at what level did the water stop rising?

about 40 feet from the top! ....almost got lucky there, still might..
they hit a rather soft layer of rock down around 120. Hit bedrock at 35 feet as opposed to 150 at the other one. Must be lots of crevices down around 120 on up...he's a little concerned about how far down the pump will go without it caving in.
but still, I think i can use solar in there later on once the pond is filled. I'm a little afraid to use the well for the house. I kind of got hooked on taking a shower with good water pressure. I had thought about putting two pumps in that well, but just chickened out
i'll let you know how it goes......got snow here now, probably wont' come tomorrow to put pump in.
I'm still trying to decide what kind of switches, etc i need on it for the generator but at same time planning for future power.

I'm curious about filling pond. How much is your pump capable of pumping per minute. If it is not compariable to amount of water comming in it will take longer to fill your pond. Also what is the proballity of your pump not burning up being run for 24hrs a day for 75 or more days in a row.

Glad your well came in. Heres one more thing to cause you aggravation. The water from the well is oxygen deplete. You will somehow need to aerate the water or you could possibly kill your fish. There is a site called Pond Boss, www.pondboss.com, that can answer a lot of your questions about aeration and raising fish. Good luck!

thanks Dozer. Yeah, I've read about that. Sure wished I could have used the old stream that was there, but as the pond builder kept trying to keep the height of the dam under the 'red tape' and environmental permit standards, he kept covering the old streambed deeper and deeper, so i had to go with drilled well. I've read some of the items about a 'packed column' etc. where the water goes through a sort of filter and breaks up particles. I was thinking about building kind of a fake waterfall and stream from well to pond to help with that.
Will probably later on next spring, get a windmill aerator set up on it.
