I need to build a workbench for my out-building (40x60). I don't want anything super fancy or super expensive, just functional, and sturdy, and something I can put together myself with fundamental carpentry and welding skills.

I figured I would post a note here to see if any of you want to show off your workbenches for me to copy (sincerest form of flattery?), along with any words of wisdom you care to offer. Detailed pictures would be great, and plans would be of immense help (but too much to ask). Thanks in advance.

What dimensions do you want?

I built four 5' benches (have four kids and wanted to have them individually movable to clean behind and underneath) to take up 20' wall space. They are framed with 2x4's screwed and glued, with tops made of two laminated sheets of 3/4" plywood, with a 3'4" plywood lip on the front edge to make them look 2¼" thick. I built a fence (splash) board into the back that will clamp a 20' 2x4 to hold all four benches together. They are on wheels and will roll out if needed. Each has a set of cabinet doors and three drawers that are on rails that give full access to each drawer. Not quite finished yet, but plans are to build in some woodworking equipment for future use.

Sounds like you're wanting to build something out of metal and wood.

My workbench is made out of 2X4's and 2X10's and is the most sturdy workbench I've ever had. I used the 2X10's for the top instead of plywood because I like to be able to screw right into it if I need to hold something in place. The construction is pretty basic, but it's held up well over the years.

Here's a picture of part of the bench.

You can see that I built it in an "L" shape. The leg on the right in the first picture is about 90" long.

Here's a picture of the left side, which is about 80" long.

I added a couple of shelves under the right leg, and even threw in a used drawer I had laying around.

Here's the last picture. This shows a closer look at where the two legs meet.
