Need you opinions on RFM\'s....

I need to purchase a rear finishing mover for my 2 acre lot. Mostly flat, semi hay and St. Augustine grass mixed. My dealer handles BushHog/LandPride/Rhino. I will be looking at a 72" (6ft) rear discharge.

I am looking for comments (good or bad...especially the bad...) from people that have used these brands of RFMs.

Thanks,

Re: Need you opinions on RFM\'s....

I have mowed about 8 acres per week with a Bush Hog RDTH 72 for the last few years. I've had to deal with the grass and weeds getting too tall, a few rocks, tree branches, etc. I've sharpened the blades a few times, and I broke the drive belt once (probably not at the right tension, or maybe the mice that lived in the mower for a while chewed it). Otherwise just grease the spindles and gauge wheels and go. I find it hard to imagine a better mower for my purposes.

Hi Brandon!

I'm wondering how you're going to use an RFM if you don't have a tractor yet? According to your profile, you're still looking for one. Did you get a tractor and forget to update your profile? Otherwise, let me know how you can use an RFM without a tractor so I can get an RFM too, cause I don't have my tractor yet! /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Golfgar4,

You amuse me! I will be purchasing the tractor NH TC45 with 16LA loader and 6ft Box blade in about 4 weeks (hopefully!!!!). I was originaly going to get a Rhino SE6 brush cutter but after much research (TBN) I have decided to go with a RFM instead. This will save me the expense of buying one later and having the SE6 just sitting around.....

Hope that clears it all up for you.

That's what my wife always says to me. But I think she means it differently than you do! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

I had a feeling that was the answer I was going to hear. Congratulations on your decision! In another post, I mentioned that I was climbing around on some boomers yesterday, and a 45 was one of them. Although it's a little big for my plans, it is a sweet machine!

It's amazing how some research on TBN can head you in a totally different direction.

Sorry I can't help you with first hand experience with RFM's. Good luck on your search!

Re: Need you opinions on RFM\'s....

Brandon,
I have a Woods RD8400 rfm, I mow 2+ acres once or twice a week. I have put a few sets of blades on it - otherwise no problems. You have more pto hp than me I would recommend a 84" if you can swing it.

Re: Need you opinions on RFM\'s....

I have the Land Pride 2584 (7') rear finish mower for my TC45D. It does a great job. I opted for the extra roller in front which comes in handy on rougher ground. I have only had it about a year, use it to mow about 2 acres once a week or so, and am very happy with the results. I am getting ready to sharpen the blades soon, which will be the first maintenence other than greasing I have performed.

How long does it take you to mow the 2 acres with your 2584?

Trying to get a feel.

Re: Need you opinions on RFM\'s....

I mow 3 acres of open lawn in 50 minutes with a 60" mower.

Re: Need you opinions on RFM\'s....

I have the brush hog RD72 RFM. It does the job very nicely. I have a few rolling grades and you have to watch scalping with a deck that wide. Very quiet operation. Overall I'd say it good mower deck, BUT, mine is still practially new. I got it in April, and have about 15 hours of mowing time (guesstimate).
