I'm most likely going to buying a TC48DA here within the next two months, there are several NH dealers within 75 miles. I've called the two closest and got quotes for $19300 and $18350. My question is how much negotiating can one do one the purchase of a tractor? I've not had much experience with buying tractors. Are you more likely to negotiate down the price of the tractor or additional implements, services etc.? Thanks for all the help. Longtime lurker on this board, figured its time to get into the game.

I've found my local NH dealer to be extremely flexible on pricing. My NH has a higher 'list' price than many similar size tractors of other brands, but when the negotiations were complete, I got mine for a price that made the local Kubota/Cub/Case dealer drop his jaw (and I've purchased 4 or 5 tractors from the Kubota/Cub/Case dealer).

Now, if I had a crystal ball..............

The amount of negotiating, IMO, is up to the dealer. If he wants your business and thinks of you as a good future customer, and is willing to make less money on your 'deal', maybe you can negotiate. But don't think one will find a 'formula' that will work for all or even a few dealers.

When making a better deal, you will need to sell yourself, IMO.

I consider the location of the dealer, how I have been treated there, how he leans over backward for me, how bad I might need him in my future (repair, service, parts, rental or loan of equipment).

My dealer treats me well but I know of others that I think I could get along just as well with, but they don't sell the green paint that I like. If I was to buy orange, there is a fantastic orange dealer that I think I would like real well.

It's just money. The price difference you speak of is not worth losing a good relationship with a potentially good dealer, IMO. Dealers are people, and I treat them like I would want to be treated. I'm happy, and hope you will be too. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

When I was buying my tractor, I found out that the Case DX 55 was pretty much the same tractor, so I visited a Case Dealer and got a quote. I told the NH dealer I was considering both tractors since they were essentially the same. Both dealers had a good service department. I never asked either dealer to lower the price they quoted me. All I did was tell them that the other dealer had just beat their quote. I even told the NH dealer, that I thought the offer they were making was fair and that they didn't need to try and beat the last deal from Case. They came back with an even lower price and the Case dealer dropped out of the bidding.

I really wanted the NH anyway, but wasn't gonna get hung up on the color.

It was a pretty low stress transaction.

Obviously some dealers do different things. I have given up on the whole trying to price things high and leaving myself working room. The problem I kept running into was that once I was willing to come off "x" amount then the customers wanted to keep going...and then it just gets out of hand. I now have set prices for my major items, tractors & package deals. This allows me to concentrate more on the selling aspect rather than the negotiating aspect and it has worked ecellent so far this year.

Thanks for all of the replies. I may try to talk with the dealer a bit on the price, but I don't think $18350 is unreasonable for the TC48DA.

Thanks again.

The price $18350, is this tractor 2wd or 4wd? Does that price of $18350 come with a front loader (18LA)? My TC48DA is a 2wd and it came with the 18LA front loader. I purchased it for $20400. I put 20% down and finaced the rest from New Holland credit with 2.9% apr. Since I purchased the tractor and front loader, my dealer has sold me several attachments which I've saved $1200 on. You can negotiate the first service on the tractor, but I opted for savings on attachments. And my dealer has come through with his prices of attachments for my tractor.

The $18350 is for a 4WD TC48DA, no FEL, no attachments, the dealer also is going to fill the tires and install a block heater. Is this too high a price?

If you don't need a 4wd, a 2wd is only $15200 here in Kentucky and Tennessee. I'm not sure what it would cost to have the tires filled and a block heater installed. But $18350 is not a had deal for a 4wd with the extra things you want done. One thing you might get the dealer to throw on for free is a front grill guard. The next time you go to the dealer, take a look at the front head lights that are on the TC48DA. If you broke one of those head lights, there $600 a piece to replace ($1200 a set). My dealer told me there's not a company that makes replacements here in the states yet and if you break one, he'll have to order one from Italy (that's where there made at). Now the bulb can be purchased at any auto parts store. Anyway's, good luck with what ever route you decide to take.
