Neighbor's dogs

Depending on the dog, you can train them to behave the way you want while they are visiting. It doesn't have to be the end of the world if a neighbor's dog passes through and is not destroying anything.

My guess is that if you can get the dog to respond to you with a treat reward, you can train it a little bit.

But then there are the dogs from Hades. I recall taking a stray into the garage while we tried to find who owned it. All it wanted to do was mark territory on anything and everything in the garage. Could care less about people. Seriously messed up dog from a bad home. When I described the dog to the animal control officer over the phone, she recognized it.

Neighbor a few houses away has some Rottweilers that they like to leave free roaming , they aren't mean dogs but they make my wife nervous about being around our dog, plus they leave lots of piles. Tried some diplomacy , that was a dead end. I was really struggling to find something to deter them without danger of real injury, ended up with a mid grade paintball gun. It has adjustable pressure so you can tone it down, I set it by throwing an old lightweight carpet over the clothesline and just set it high enough so it reliably breaks the paintballs, good deterrent plus it sends a neon pink message home with the dogs that someone is not happy with their visits.

:cool2:
Super soaker squirt gun with ammonia in it will train those dogs to go home and not come back. It will should not harm the animal but cause enough discomfort for them not to come back. The other alternative is pepper spray.

The idea is to change the dogs' behavior - not create a big problem with the neighbor like killing their dogs or calling the pound.
With a little tabasco '

That's a pretty good idea! And it kills 2 birds with one paintball!

We have a neighbor about the same way. He got some chickens and they dont feed their animals. Naturally the chickens dont respect boundries. At first it ditnt bother us. My wife gave them names and sometimes even enjoyed them. Then it wasnt long till they were pooping on sou sidewalk, comming inside the garage and pooping. Every time we turned around we were steeeping in a pils of it. Finally she got the paint ball gun out and talk about makeing that old rooster step high. Looked like he was steeping on hot rocks. But they still would come back. One morning about 6am a car hit one of them in front of our house I picked the chicken up all bloodey, walked over to his house and pounded on his door, he came to the door all drogie eyed and I layed the chicken down and walked away. A few days latr the chickens were all gone. Now he has two dogs that come over and harass our cats, getting in the garage and making a mess, getting into the cat food, knocking their feeding bowels down. My wife is furious. Some people just dont get it. But they are the type that could make your life a living **** if you made them mad. We might have to deal with the problem discretely if they dont get a handle on it.

Most of you fellas are much better men then me! I have a real problem when other people allow there animals on my place. To me it is total lack of respect for me and my property. Referring to "constant" problem people or animals, not the occasional :the kids left the gate open" thing, that happens.

I have 2 neighbors like this, 1 thinks every shelter animal should be in a home (her husband told me this). The other thinks having many Pit bulls is "cool", (he told me this).

I agree, if need be, deal with it discretely. Maybe I have to much testosterone, dont think so though, I dont like Nascar:D:laughing:

No, it is a respect thing.

It is also a mentality of taking ownership of things. The can do no wrong, because it is mine attitude comes into play.

"Good fences make good neighbors" shouldn't be overlooked. They are expensive and do add work to keep them looking good and trimmed under.

My FIL would ping the neighbors' dogs and cats on the butt with a BB gun. His lawn was very special to him and for a dog or cat to even think about using it was a sacrilege of the highest order. He just had a thing about his lawn. There were some pretty detailed deed covenants on the lots where he lived. It could be fences were not permitted, I don't recall seeing any on those properties.

Rules vary by town/city. We have had several "incidents" (attacks on our old cocker at our front door, 2 dog bites while walking our dogs). The first bite was met by them having to prove rabies vax. The second bite had the sheriff out here where he explained nothing could be done under the law. I laughed at the thought that with our new "castle doctrine" I can legally shoot a human on my property if I am threatened but I can't shoot a dog. So I have a 20ga wingmaster next to the front door and do shoot over them when they appear, more to put the neighbors on notice than trying to train their dogs. We live in the sticks and the houses are spread out but people do walk dogs and such. I guess these dogs have committed enough crimes now and we notice the dogs are tied up. The neighbor's name has appeared in the county court reports for 2 weeks in a row ($263.50 each) so I guess they hit the "tipping point" where something had to be done.
