Ok.. here goes.

got the wife a netbook using winxp ( neat lil thing ).. seems to be doing fine.

about 90% of the netbooks I see are using win7 while some on xp.. non on vista cuz.. well.. I guess even MS knows it's a buggy hog.

Since my desktop crash at work a few months ago, and subsequent home pc crash a month ago, I've just been operating off a vista laptop.. it works.. and I'm getting used to it.

After playing with the wife's netbook last night, I'm thinking about getting one for myself. ( here's will be used for work / travel, so won't be available to me ).

Looks like 99% of them are configured the same.. n270 intel atom 1.6ghz proc, 1g ram, 160g hdd ( though I see some with 250g hdd ).. 3 usb-2 ports, network port, headphone jack, and either intel 950 graphics . or an nvidia ion? to mee.. looks like all the netbooks are virtually identical in function.. I see one brand claims to expand to 2gb ram.. etc.. etc.

At home, my use is limited to tractor board browseing ( no really! ) email and MS works stuff like word processor or spreadsheet.. and all these beasts seem to have works installed.. so... here's the question. I'm familiar with xp like the back of my hand.. and like outlook express as an email client. I've not used win7.. and have some exp on vista and the new 'microsoft mail'.. I really don't like anything about vista.. :)

one last thing... for work I'm mobile with a sprint broadband card.. made in 5/08 It seems to work fine on my vista and xp machine.. but i wonder about win7, as it is such a new os..?? I'll need the card to be able to migrate between my netbook and vista laptop.. so it can't be a software issue where I need new software for win7.. but not for the other.. so I don't want to get myself stuck.. etc. I'm really thinking about just getting an xp netbook since I like xp... so should I get a xp netbook or a win7?.. and why?

lastly... this atom processor.. hows it stack up against say.. the older pentium 3/ or AMD sempron/athlon type processor.. ( single core ).. or the celeron R found in most economy laptops..

forgot to mention.. I see they now have some desktops built on this same platform.. IE. a small box the size of a paperback novel, standing on it's side, with headphone and microphone jack, usb ports, and a vga port.. just slap on your present full sized monitor, keyboard, mouse and have a spare usb slot for a hub.. etc.. and you have a cheap lil desktop.. neat what they are doing with size these days.. etc.

stay away from netbooks. too hard on the eyes. not enough room for hands. get the netbook if you travel alot. windows 7 is nice. I tested out the beta and I like it. windows 7 has a xp feel based on vista.

Sempron from AMD and celeron from intel is ok- I prefer you stay away from them although I know the price seems really good on them but after a couple years, you will feel its getting old and not what it used to be.
