Never Seen Anything Like This...

Never seen anything attached like this to a backhoe. I have seen them attached to swampbuggy things. They have been in the area trimming limbs along powerlines for a couple of weeks. Though I would just post a few pictures.

They do something similar around here using a boom pole. These pictures you posted look like some really bizarre fabrication though! Is that pole made of pvc?

yes its a saw blade they are cutting the branches around the hydro lines

Weedeater on steroids with a rotary brush/branch blade? Doubt it is PVC, most likley spiral wound fiberglass like a fishing rod. Large diameter for rigidity and not too much weight. Non-conductive for working around the lines.

It took a little searching from here

Trim All Equipment Company’s saw blade mounts to a standard backhoe. The 24-inch circular saw blade sits on the end of a telescopic fiberglass boom which reaches heights of 55 feet. To mount, remove two pins that secure the digging stage of the boom, reinstall the pins in the bracket of the Trim All, and connect the hydraulic couplers. The controls are operated just as the backhoe controls work to swing, raise, and extend the boom. A valve engages and disengages a hydraulic motor that rotates the blade. The saw cuts limbs up to 10 inches in diameter quickly and cleanly.

This last year the power company came through my area trimming back trees with something similar. The one here was an articulated machine with tires about 6’ tall and a boom with blade that reached over 80’. Wish I had a photo. This thing was driving through ditches that would have been hard on an ATV.

Probably fiberglass (or PVC would work) with hydralic lines so if he hits a power line at least the tractor won't light up...

God forbid they should take the time to prune the branches the right way. Just cut them off without any concern about the health of the tree.

That is interesting, not something I'd want to be at the controls of for sure! I once saw a powerline timmer dangling from a helicopter. It had several circular blades in a long contraption. Another thing I would not want to be operating.

I wonder if that was the same guy that trimmed the powerline on my parent's property here in MS, said he had came all the way from Georgia in that contraption trimming right of way.

Could be. I talked to the guys a few minutes when it looked like that beast was going to come on the turf grass I planted on the power line. They were doing contract work for Ga. Power so I am sure they must travel a lot. It was obviously an expensive specialty machine so you have to keep it working.
