I took delivery on the tractor yesterday. I have read the manual twice! I am looking at buying a 6' bushog SQ720. The SQ720 comes with a 65HP gear box. The recommended tractor HP is 30 to 45hp. Is this the hp of the motor or the PTO. The 4100 has a 34hp on the PTO, do you think this rotary cutter will be to much for this tractor?

I am going to spend the next few days driving the tractor around the property to become familiar with it. I read in the manual to only shift gears when the tractor is stopped?

Pg. 39 of Mahindra manual

DO NOT OPERATE GEAR LEVERS WITHOUT FIRST STOPPING THE TRACTOR & WITHOUT USING THE CLUTCH.

So I guess I can't change gears as I am driving correct?

Lastly I have some pretty steep hills on my property that leads down to the creek bottoms. What would be the ideal gear to climb back up the hills out of the bottoms?

don't mean to sound stupid but this is my first tractor and it has been difficult for me to find someone to show the me the ropes......thanks

You would not want to be moving while shifting ranges but you should be able to shift gears while moving.

Do you have 4 speeds and 3 ranges (H,M & L)?

As far coming out of the bottom, some where in L or M range to a gear (speed) your comfortable with. I would suggest staying out of H range while doing this!

I use to have a 4110 and ran a Befco 6 ft cutter with no problems. That Mahindra will run a 6 ft like it isn't even back there

The gear levers really need to be shifted from a stop, but I often upshift or down shift on the move within a range, and don't grind the gears.

The shuttle on this one works well, just shove the clutch in and work the shuttle lever and let the clutch out to reverse direction.

The Bush Hog will be fine. Both the gross and PTO HP are within the 30-45 range you mentioned.

You should be stopped to change the range gears(L,M,H) but can shift the 4 gears on the go - 1st & 2nd gear are not syncronized but can be shifted carefully on the go without grinding any gears. Unless they've changed, 3rd & 4th gears are syncronized and can be shifted just like an automobile. My Howse rotary is a 6' with a 50 hp gearbox and it works extremely well on my 4110 - many, many hours of cutting with it. I used to do alot of creek work with my 4110 when I lived in Tenn. and I virtually never got out of Medium range - 1st & 2nd gears. You'll get used to it before long, and will appreciate what a workhorse your tractor is.

Thanks for the help. Another question I have is what is the best RPM range for the tractor while driving. Should I keep it above 1500 rpms? 2000 rpms?

Thats up to you except for when using the PTO. PTO driven implements require a designated RPM which is usually identified on the tachometer (usually between 2300-2700rpm) for most tractors. Traveling speed would then be done with gearing.

Each job will require a different rpm, it's up to you to learn what those are! For me it's 2100rpm for loader work, 1600rpm for raking and 2400rpm for mowing (pto driven implement). Good Luck!

Driving I mostly hold it at 1200 ish. Loader work, the hand throttle is set to 1500 and I use the foot when I am looking for more (not often) . Crawling out, well, it depends on where I am /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I told my dealer that I put chains on it and he said that I could go places that I didnt want to get to. I told him that getting there wasnt the problem, getting back out is where the chains come in. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am running a 5 foot brushhog now and my 3510 doesnt know I put anything back there, yours wont feel that 6 footer until you start taking larger saplings. I hog at about 1200-1500 rpm for most grasses and weeds. I get into heavier stuff I bump it up.
Dont get all that excited about the PTO mark on the tach, it really just means that you are getting your 540 or 1000 at PTO at that RPM which you NEED for some implements. A brush hog isnt one of them. It is not required to run that hard all the time. Those weeds wont know you killed them slow /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
If you dont believe me, try running it hard and then running it around 12-1500 cutting weeds. It will cut just as good and you can play with your gears more and not have to wear ears every time you go out.

540 RPMs for a bush hog is more of a max than a constant requirement. It is much easier to judge the RPMs by just running high enough to keep the tractor from bogging down.
