Tractor
Mahindra 4110
I am getting ready to make my first tractor purchase and have pretty much decided on the 4500. I was quoted 20K out the door and delivered for the 4500 2wd, FEL, 6' box blade, 6' disc, 6' land pride cutter(all medium duty), boom pole and 7000 lb trailer with outriggers for unloading. I will be using it in breeder chicken houses and keeping up +/- 43 acres. Is this a decent price and will it be enough tractor. Thanks for any help.

Definitely enough tractor! Do you need one so large in a breeder house is the question. But that is your specialty there. The only thing I don't like about your package is the trailer. The tractor alone weighs around 4700 lbs. How much more weight is the FEL? And will you load the tires? I'd move up to a 10K trailer. A lot has been said on here about the importance of having far more trailer than you need. I've been convinced that is the way to go.

Congrats on your investment.

It will only be in the houses when I'm out of birds, 45 weeks of chicken poop will need a good sized tractor to clean up. I don't plan on the tractor being on the trailer much after its delivered and I may end up on the wrong end of an "I told you so" but I'm going to try the smaller trailer to start, if a bigger one is needed, I'll suck it up and get it. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm like the other post--watch that trailor size.
I made the wrong choice and regret it.

A 45hp tractor that weights what the 4500 weights will be plenty.

I would strongly consider a 4x4 in a slightly smaller tractor. I would look at the 4110 4x4. It will have plenty of power for a 6'bb, disc and brush hog but should work better with a FEL. IF you don't have a need for the bb, disc, hog, boom pole or trailer, get the dealer to give you credit for them.

PS I would also get a good pressure washer to pash the poo off.

Already have the pressure washer and will need all implements, although I hadn't thought about the 4110, do you know the approximate cost difference?

I agree on the feedback on the trailer, especially since you'll end up putting fluid/water in the rear tires so you can use that FEL and other equipment, not to mention soften the ride. The fluid in my industrial tires on my 4110 added right at 700 lbs, per tire!! I also agree that you might be better served with a 4x4 - FEL work will be so much better, like the difference between day & nite. When I snapped a front axle in my 4110 and was in the middle of a loader job I had to finish, it was like a totally different piece of equipment trying to finish that job. I wouldn't even consider a 2x tractor for loader work. Be sure on your trailer that you have "E" range tires too - they will be 8 or 10 ply - not worth the risk to use anything less.

You will need to talk to your dealer about price of a 4110. The price is reagonal.

That leads me to an issue not brought up in this thread yet. The quality of your dealer. In my opinion, that is the biggest difference between the big 3 and Mahindra. That is not to say there are not prenty of good Mahindra dealers. We know there are. That is also not to say there are not bad big 3 dealers. We know there are.

Well back to my point. For a 'normal' home owner type tractor owner, waiting a week or two for a part is not usually that big a deal. For a business owner, time is money. Waiting a week for a part could kill your business. You need to get to know your dealer and his shop. Know what he will and won't be able to do.

Additionally, a good dealer can make a lemon barable. A bad dealer can take a good tractor and make you wish you bought a different brand.

My advice to anyone looking for a tractor. Shop dealers first. Shop the brand second. Shop the price third.

What about the 4500 4wd or the 4530? Y'all have really got me thinking about the 2wd vs the 4wd issue.

I'm certain that you already looked into the overhead clearance needed with the 4500. I don't know the heigth of your doors or ceiling but the exhaust and roll bar stick up pretty high. Do the buildings that you're cleaning out have cement or dirt floors. I can well imagine that this manure sets up like concrete after a few months and 4wd would definitely be an asset to you. I think you could justify the extra cost with the 4wd 1,000 times over. As the FEL gets to capacity, the backend gets lighter but with the 4wd, the front tires only get more traction. The 4500 is a darn good model as I have one and I have never regretted it.

As far as the trailer capacity, the only thing the other guys and myself are recommending is because we learned the hard way. I would recommend that you don't even buy one if it is not an important accessory for your needs. To license it each year, you could borrow or rent a trailer for that once or twice you might need it. A 12,000 lb capacity trailer is what I'd recommend as it will easily carry your equipment - no worries about tire blowouts, etc and much more easy to resell.

I'm seeing more and more "package" deals on TBN lately and it's a nice way to purchase a bunch of equipment at one time. It might surprise you however just how much you are paying for each individual piece of equipment. You are buying what the dealer sells and it gives you no chance to buy something else that might be a better buy.

Best of luck with your purchase - Clyde
