I decided to hook up the bush hog to my new 5010 HST Cab for the first time this past weekend. The PTO shaft has a rubber or vinyl cover that had to be taken off before I could use it. I laid the cover and two bolts along with a ratchet and socket down somewhere and now can't find them, hoping I did lay them on the tractor and they fell off going down the road, but that is possible.

Question: do I have to have this cover on the PTO when not in use, if so, I am going to have to try and find a part number so I can order one?

Question: I am used to my 2615 Gear, so when I engage the PTO I can slowly release the clutch and start up the implement. On the 5010 it has a switch on the dash to push and the PTO starts, it seems to start quickly and sounds like it is hard on the implement. I just read that with this type PTO I should be at idle speed when I engage the PTO, I will try that have not yet. But, is there is a right and wrong way to do it? And I understand this is a live PTO and being HST there is no means to come to a stop pushing the clutch in but leaving the PTO engaged. Does the PTO stop turning if I lift the implement all the way up or does it keep running?

Love this tractor, have about 30 hours on it so far. Only disappointment is I feel Mahindra and the dealer should emphasize the need to fill the rear tires to the customer. I am going to have to haul to a tire dealer or have them come to the farm to fill the tires because the backend is off the ground a lot with just a bucket of dirt or at least light feeling.

You do not have to have the rubber protective cover on the the pto shaft , in all the years I have had tractors I never used one . It does help keep stuff off it so it will stay cleaner , I suppose much depends on the conditions you are working in . I have an hst with a sliding lever to engage the pto so I can ease it in slowly. You do want your rpm's as low as you can set it to engage the pto . A bush hog can be way out of balance until the blades are rotating together , it won't hurt it a bit as it starts up . Be very careful useing your loader without some weight on your back end as I have loaded tires on my 5700 and that isn't enough at times .

Why not push the clutch in, flip the switch, then let the pedal out? I can do that with my MX, though my switch is a lever.

No clutch, it is HST.

Well that puts the kabosh on that idea. For the record mine is an hst too, but has a clutch. I like it there in case I forget which tractor I'm on. No matter what, hit the clutch, and everything stops.

No clutch, it is HST.

Call me crazy, but my Max HST has a clutch.... is the 5010 different? In fact, i cannot engage either of my PTO levers unless I depress the clutch.

Maybe I do not understand my tractor, hst is new to me. The manual shows the brake pedals, does not call it a clutch and the only other pedals are the hst for ward and reverse pedals on the right side floor, left side is the brake. Will try was pressing the brake pedal and see if the pto stops. The manual shows the pto switch on the dash, no lever, it is electronic and it is a live pto.

I think you've got it figured out right. I've heard there are tractors out there that are hst and don't have a clutch.

The Max series is made by Mitsubishi and they have a pto clutch pedal. This is a mechanical type system. The 10 series is made by TYM and they have a electric pto clutch so it doesn't have a clutch pedal.

Only engage the PTO at idle. The electro - hydraulic PTO clutch in the 10 series is not built to handle the torque load of engaging a high rotating mass implement at high RPM.
