My 2004 2500HD has the Allison and I love it. It is very seamless shift.

The tow haul mode is great for engine braking. One improvement I see here I wish I had was the driver control. I have experienced RPMS in the Red range when using the tow haul and going down an incline with heavy load. I try to watch this and if necessary turn off the tow haul and disengage the braking to drop the RPMS. Good thing the truck and trailer brakes work well!

I really like the Duramax and Allison combo.:thumbsup:

I had a 05 Dmax and just like you felt it could have done better with the down shifting. My Ford Torque Shift seems to do better at this task. That being said I did like the Allison. It was the best part of the truck in my eyes. I know 4 or 5 folks with Dmax/Allisons and they have had zero issues with them and they will handle about 150 additional HP without up grades. Go past that and expect issues.

Wonder if they fixed the cheap leaky cooler lines on this new version?

When towing a load and beginning a descent I turn off tow/haul and put the transmission in manual mode and shift it into whatever gear is appropriate. This really works well and you can really control your speed to whatever you are comfortable with. I always use tow\haul when towing as it keeps the transmission cooler especially when climbing a pass under load, it's just going down hills where I find it too agressive.

I wouldn't be concerned too much about a occassional foray above the red line. I do it with all equipment. There's some margin of error built into engines. My DTA466 goes above rec. RPM quite often with no ill results.

One thing to remember is if your trailer is on the lighter side-say 5-10K after towing a heavier trailer say 10-15K, the tow haul needs a little time to learn the lighter trailer and sometimes high gradient brake RPM is a result.

As far as the tap up/down manual shift mode, I agree 150%. What a great feature for the '06 & up 6 speed Ally trucks!! Gotta love it. Something the Ford guys only wish they had! :D
