Knute,

I had a Modern box blade and was not all that impressed. The upper arms on it were not bery strong and I bent them by hitting stumps while in reverse. I would not recommend their box blade.

I now have a Howse brand box blade and it is much stronger. If you can find pictures of each you will see the difference.

The Howse uses 2 large pieces of almost triangular shape metal between the BB and where it attaches to the upper link on the 3PH. A much stronger design than the Modern. BTW, most manufacturers use the same design as Modern uses, Howse is about the only one who had the stronger upper area.

I am happy with the Modern rotary cutter. I got the hot dip galvanized option which was only $55 more.

For what it is worth, I had a 42" Howse rotary cutter and sold it with the old tractor. It had too much space between the blade and the plate the blades mount to. The result was that grass would get caught in that space and the blades would "lock up" and the thing would vibrate horribly until I stopped and cleared the blades. A real pain in the neck. I have not had that problem with the Modern rotary cutter.

It seems to me that no one implement manufacturer has the best of everything. You have to look at each implement and go with what looks like it would work best for your particular usage.
